This is good news, imo. This way their talented staff can reenter the industry at large and pursue whatever work they're passionate about without being stifled in the shadow of Miyazaki's legacy. Which sounds like a good thing for everyone.

(How many sociopath points does this post net me? I'm thinking a lot.)

Actually, what you say is right. It's sad thinking that Studio Ghibli will disband, but also comforting to know that the people working for it will still be out there, bringing more to anime than just what Ghibli was producing.

Personally the last Ghibli movie I enjoyed was Arrietty. The 3 I've seen since bored me to tears. Even Miyazaki's final film was bland. I tried to uplift that sadness with Ni No Kuni only to find that Ghibli made some amazing early game animations, than nothing for last 3/4th's of it, for a rather subpar game.

The studio will be missed but as others have said, the talent still exists. It will just be moving on to different studios and they will no longer have to work beneath the shadow of Miyazaki.

Wow, this is really shocking... I was looking forward to seeing Goro create a separate legacy from that of his father and further grow the studio. Now it looks like that's not gonna happen.
On a related note, I wonder how this is gonna impact Ronia The Robber's Daughter? Will it air or not? I was really looking forward to seeing it.

This is sad, but to be honest...I too far prefer "classic" Ghibli. I mean, those movies were brilliant! I haven't truly enjoyed a Ghibli movie like I still continue to enjoy their older movies. In a way, I feel like they've lost their touch, and their newer films lacked that wonderful magic of their amazing old ones.

This is really shocking and sad though. The comparison would be like Disney shutting down. Can't believe it.

Well, it's better to have it end now instead of holding out until it loses the public's good graces.

Ghibli had pretty animation but I really can't say I liked many of their movies. Regardless, they made the right choice. Better to go out strong rather than Gonzo it all the way to hell.

Noooooo, how can I be in denial about a spirited away sequel now.

Wow, this is crazy. I don't keep up on licensing/financial stuff, so I never saw this coming. Kind of like the end of an era

Hopefully we'll see some other cool stuff come from other studios with the talent going to other places.
