In games I like to go with dual-wield too, it's fun if you can shoot of limbs and more super intense gore :3 Muhahaha

Or Nailguns! Nailguns are awesome, they hurt a lot and make a mess and are just really cool :3 Plus there will always be nails around in a war zone from rubble from destroyed buildings and such XD

This would be mine:
For those who would like to know it's called a Nagamaki. It is a bladed Japanese pole arm.

For a melee weapon I'd have to say either a sword or one of those extendable batons.

I'm going to divide this by weapon types. (and leave off types where I can't really pick)

Battle Rifle: M1 Garand, the semi-auto firepower of this rifle makes it the king of battle rifles.

Assault Rifle: AK-47, It is rugged and reliable so you can't really go wrong.

Pistol: Difficult choice and I'm going to pick a somewhat impractical one in the Glock Model 18

Longsword: Katana, A well made katana (at least a 3-body blade) represents the peak of sword technology

Greatsword: Zweihander, there really isn't many contenders in the hand-and-a-half and above category...

Spear/Halberd: Naginata, same folding method as the katana but on a long shaft. 11/10 would sever head again.

Small Club: Flanged Mace, simple yet effective...

Great Club: Kanabo, The most feared weapon on a JP battlefield was not the katana nor the yumi but rather this beast of a studded great club. It is often depicted as a weapon of demons. Shields don't matter with this thing, your arm will break anyway.

Bow: English Longbow, one of the most iconic non-blade weapons in history and for good reason. Swords are sexy but ranged combat wins wars.

Aircraft: A-10, While fighter jets are always the sexy choice it is the ground attack planes that get work done.

Axe: E-Tool, not a true axe but can certainly be used as one as it is extremely sharp and effective. The perfect battlefield multi-tool.

If we are talking VG/Fantasy weapons I have different list.

Uchigatana (Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II)

Dragon Bone Smasher (Demon's Souls)

Fire Whip/Notched Whip (Castlevania, Dark Souls, Dark Souls II)

Knight's Hospitaller Halberd (War of the Roses)

Almain Warhammer (War of the Roses)

Langer Morgenstern (War of the Roses)

Ragnite Lance & Sheild (Valkyria Chronicles)

Organic Mass Energy Neutralizer (Goldeneye: Rogue Agent)

Gough's Greatbow (Dark Souls)

Su-47 (Ace Combat 4)

Jimmy Graham (Madden)

Grant (Dark Souls)

Mk 22 (MGS Series)

Bonewheel Shield (Dark Souls)

Excalibur (Fate)

Wabbajack (The Elder Scrolls)

Scraping Spear (Demon's Souls)

Porn Magazine (MGS Series)

Moonwalker Greatsword (My own creation)

Gallian A-Series (Valkyria Chonicles)

Hawatcha Rockets (Guns of Icarus)

My favourite weapon for the past 7 years has been two scythes held together by a chain, or perhaps one scythe on it's own since that's a little too dangerous. I've always fantasised about this weapon but I finally found it a few years ago in an anime.

That list...
Just WOW! That was amazing! Thanks for saying so many. Also high-five for fellow M1 Garand lover.

Yeah, I had to add battle rifles just to shoehorn that one into the list. I can't bring myself to not mention it as it likely had a huge impact on history.

A basic knife. Honestly one of the few practical weapons to be carrying around in society that hasn't been absolutely ravaged by weapon control laws.

Swords are my favorite.

And pretty much any iteration of a sword works for me.

Snake Sword, Bastard Sword, Rapier, Katana, Zweihander, Hidden Blade, Dagger, etc etc etc.

Least favorite...

Any sort of firearm. While I am fine and OK with guns in todays world really... when it comes to my fantasy settings in books, games, and movies, i'd much rather see a sword fight than a gun fight.

I like playing fps games, but that's just because there hasn't been a game that gives you enough freedom with a melee weapon. In real life I'd like to see all the guns dissapear so people can go back to a nice old swordfight ^^.
