At anime expo this year me and my friends some how ended up at an [email protected] panel. One of the people on the panel was this african man who had a bit of an African accent. He was also dressed up in dapper and looked like a serious intimidating businessman which really threw me off. But he was an [email protected] fan, and at one point during the pannel he even said Hibiki was his waifu. He was awesome.

Man I love unexpected anime fans

They're totally awesome. I personally was never surprised. I'm more surprised at people I think would like anime actually hate it.

Yeah, I can't think of ever being surprised by someone liking anime. I do have loads of dorky friends who don't. That kind of puzzles me. But then I guess I was like that for a long time.

Not so much surprised, but I'm nearing 30 now, and I've worked at a few different places too and occasionally I speak to random people in the workplace who seem to only like (I live in England) Football, playing Fifa and Call of Duty on the Xbox 360, but on the odd occasion they bring up anime they've seen and often don't even know what the term 'anime' is but have still watched a movie or TV series.

I'm not ashamed of watching anime, and I tell most people I watch it, but I don't often bring it up to strangers in the context of "WOW I watched an episode of One Piece last night and Franky, you know, the cyborg pervert with blue hair and red speedo's who thinks everything is SUUUUUPEEEEEEER! Anyway yeah he was firing lasers out of his nipples vs a full grown man dressed in a baby costume". I'll bring up series like Attack on Titan, Death Note and a couple of movies and surprisingly most people have either heard of them or actually watched them.

I had a Survey Corps hoodie that I wore one day going to school, and whilst in History class, this guy out of the blue told me that "my jacket was sick," and called me his "bro", and I asked him if he knew what Shingeki no Kyojin was, and he even knew the Japanese title. It was so surprising because he's one of your stereotypical "jock" dudes, who was also kind of a popular kid. If you wanna put it that way. We were merely acquaintances, and I didn't really have an opinion of him. He sat next to me at lunch the next day, and showed me some manga he was reading. This dude was reading Magi, and some Kuroko No Basket on Mangafox.com.

And now he's reading Tokyo Ghoul and we're fan girling about it together. I've known him since Freshman year, I didn't even think it were possible to be pretty good friends with someone like him. Don't judge a book by its cover, and even some of the descriptions available on the back of the book.

This sounds like an awesome romance story. I'm rooting for you!

Well my manager at work and his boss both seem to be. My manager's cubicle is decorated with anime (Azumanga Diaoh in particular). And his boss recognized my LoZ lanyard and Akatsuki shirt (though she mistook it for Okami, close 'nough lol). If I met them outside of work first I might not be as surprised, but it's mainly just the fact that my manager and his boss...are anime fans. It weirds me out to think that was actually possible.

I belong here. :')

I think it was suprising for people to learn that i'm only recent to watching anime.

It's not that unusual to have a few people out of a group who have some less likely interest.

Would be funny if you decided to miss a day of work to watch anime(maybe some new series that you were hyped for came out) and your boss was fine with it.Same goes with a convention as long as you brought them back something.

The entire track team for me. On my first day of tryouts all I saw on the track was a ton of uber tanned teens who looked like they would diss on anything mildly "geeky" or "not-popular." Boy, was I wrong. Almost all of them are into some kind of anime, and my buddy came to school during spirit week cosplaying as Gintoki. :,D

I had a substitute teacher my junior year in high school. He was like "Do your work." He went around the class once, sat down at a computer and started reading Fairy Tail.

Knowing me I would have talked to him instead of doing my work.
Me-"Hey Mr.Bob(let's call him that) so what's your favorite anime?"
Mr.Bob-"Do your work."
*starts doing work*
10minute later
Me-"Hey Mr.Bob have you seen Steins;Gate?"
yeah it would probably be just like that. If I was there.

The most unexpected anime fan among my friends is probably me :P
I tend to be very critical about stuff, and I'm always annoyed when my friends talk about some anime, because it's usually mainstream ones i don't enjoy.

Two of my college professers. One of them loves Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy while the other prof loves sci-fi anime like Ghost in Shell and Psycho-Pass

1 of my professors actually brought up manga/anime in the class. He is also very fluent in the language and is a translator for ancient Japanese.
