Anime: Sword Art Online
Characters: Kirito/Kazuto and Asuna
Category: Horror
Words: 472 according to my document

I put it under spoiler because it's a horror story, and I'm not sure how many people want to actually read that. It's not my best work, but that's merely because I had to squeeze it into 500 words, and that's not easy for me. My short stories tend to have a minimum of 1000 words, so that would've been an easier maximum to keep to. But meh, my first contest opportunity, so who am I to complain? Besides, I had so much fun writing this, that I want to make a full story out of it some day, with differing facts of course, but keeping with the premise in the first paragraph, just not the rest of the story.

This sounds pretty sweet, but only 500 words? That might be challenging.

QUESTION
Isn't 500 word characters count limit too short for a story?

I was thinking about the same thing. I don't want the story to end in the middle of nothing or starting everything

Anime: Tonari No Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time
Characters: Yokoi, Rumi and Seki, Toshinari
Category: Comedy
Word Count: 500 words (According to document)

The Master of Beach Time

It was finally summer and Rumi had been looking forward to the beach trip with her family. She was away from school, away from responsibilities, but most importantly her classmate Seki-kun. The boy, who always managed to distract her in class with his creations, would be nowhere near her today.
---
The sun was bright and the smell of the ocean filled the air. Rumi couldn’t wait for some peace and quiet. She planned to lie down all day and read her new book. She helped her family unpack what they brought. However, her mother realized she forgot to bring some drinks. Her mother asked Rumi to watch the food they had brought in case seagulls came, and tried to eat it, while her parents went to the convenience store.

Rumi seeing gladly agreed as she lay down her beach down, and began reading. She looked forward to the alone time between the book and her. Some time passed, and Rumi was immersed in her book. Rumi was immersed in the story of lovers trapped in the middle of a battle. Explosions and danger around every corner…. BOOM!

Rumi bounced up in fright. Did she just imagine the explosion, or did she really hear it? She looked around and saw a familiar silhouette in the distance. “N-N-N No it can’t be! Seki-kun! What is he doing here?” she exclaimed. This was supposed to be her time away from him, and now it was ruined. She decided to go look.
Slowly she crawled and hid behind a sand castle watching Seki-kun. BOOOM! Another explosion went off, and she duct fearing for her life. When she realized where it came from she couldn’t believe her eyes. Seki-kun had built two navies out of small wooden boats! A battle raged between the boats. Every ship lobbed seashell artillery hoping to sink its enemy. Rumi gazed in amazement at the battle, however she noticed something in the middle of the battle. It was a lone raft carrying a young couple embracing each other before imminent doom.

Rumi was reminded of her book, and how the sight was so familiar. She had to save them! Rumi grabbed sand in her hand and threw it at the navies. Seki-kun was shocked at the surprise attack from behind the sand castle. Immediately both navies opened fire towards Rumi. Seashells flew and Rumi was pinned. She knew she had to save the couple, but how? She had an idea and threw sand at Seki-kun, blinding him momentarily, as she dove under the water. There was only one option left.

The waters were calm and all eyes were alert. Then suddenly Rumi rose from beneath like Godzilla smashing the boats, and rescuing the couple. Seki-kun stared wondering what Rumi was doing under the water at the beach. She quickly dashed away happy about rescuing the couple. Then a familiar voice yelled,” The seagulls have eaten our food!” She had forgotten about the food, and it was thanks to Seki-kun.

I think the 500 word limit is pretty cool. It challenges you to write a compact story and really get to the point. It'd be a pain to read them all if they were much more than 500 words

I was just thinking there are going to be many entries so that many stories with so many words would probably make the readers tired of reading lol. Plus these are just suppose to be short stories anyway so 500 words seem right.

That's a good point.

It should be fun making a short story. I just have to think what I would do..... Definitely something brutal....

If you need help keeping it short

think of it as writing a manga chapter

or one of the kagepro songs (those are around 500 words)

Hi!!

So about the 500 word limit...

I realize that it is a difficult task, but that's the challenge of it all--to be able to convey the same message and feeling in such a way that is concise is a great skill to develop! The idea behind it isn't to limit someone's creativity and imagination, but rather test it with something so imposing as a short word limit. While some can argue it's meant to make it easier for those reading it to go through the entries, it wasn't a consideration until after people started to comment on it. I thought it best to keep the limit as it allows more people to enter and we get to read more creative stories! I hope this answers everyone's question about it and understand that it's meant as a sincere gesture to see what our awesome Crunchy writers can do!
