Why do you think people mumble?
Posted 8/10/14 , edited 8/10/14
I mumble when I'm talking to people I don't want to talk to, or am talking about things I don't want to talk about.

I'm notorious for mumbling a lot, it really annoys some people. Most of the time I mumble it's because I feel the need to say something or respond, but I don't really feel it's worth saying and only say it because I have to. I also get really depressed often and don't have any effort/energy to put into talking, which then comes out as a mumble.

I tend to mumble when I begin talking too fast or too quietly.

Some people might be too shy or nervous. Others might feel indecisive what they want to say. Who knows? but it doesnt bother me tho.

I've been told I mumble a lot. For me it's probably just that I've gotten too lazy to ennunciate. Or my voice goes into my really deep range. Both happen frequently for me.

I mumble sometimes, not behind people's back or anything... I just don't speak loudly.

Some people mumble to trace their steps or to clarify in their mind the steps they needed to complete a certain task.

Actors and actresses mumble to rehearse their lines.

Some people might be critically thinking and hearing themselves speak it aloud may help them solve a situation or thought. But they don't want to be heard so they mumble.

I mumble myself and have similar experiences to others. To me, it sounds like I'm speaking clearly but others can't hear me properly. I also apparently tend to speak in something of a monotone but, again, it doesn't sound like it to me so it's hard to tell when it's happening.

Interestingly, I do sometimes speak clearly without problems and even to people with hearing difficulties but it doesn't really sound different to me. I guess there's probably a scientific explanation (does your brain filter your own voice more carefully? Are you really hearing yourself or just thinking the words?).

I guess people who speak loudly have similar problems and don't realise when they're doing it either.

I think some people imagine that you must have something to hide if you're not speaking clearly or that you're just not interested (in fairness, this may be true sometimes but doesn't have anything to do with the way you talk normally). I guess people tend to prefer those that speak the same way they do since it's easier for them to relate (even though they might actually be completely different) and communicate. It's a shame though, there are so many ways we judge each other that are so unreliable.
