I'm more of a progressive metal / math metal type person. Not so much into metalcore or heavy metal like I used to be.

But here's a nice, heavily abridged list:
Converge
Deftones
The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Fall of Troy
Mastodon
Opeth
Periphery
Protest the Hero
SikTh
TesseracT

Used to be my bread and butter, still kind of is. But slowly replacing it with more techno and indie... Plus I need to restore my classic rock collection lol. Been too long since I had my Rush and Zeppelin songs

Wait, SikTh? I don't even know who you are, but I like you already.

Metal is probably my favourite genre. I like all kinds of metal, but my favourite type are avant-garde and experimental. Or just anyone who does something weird and unconventional.

Some bands I like: Unexpect, Sigh, Periphery, Animals As Leaders.

Also, you saw Babymetal? That's freaking sick. I have been watching live videos on youtube and man it looks like so much fun to watch and be apart of.

Metal fan checking in. All of it minus some doom, black, and death. I tend to enjoy hardcore/metalcore a bit more especially the raw sounding anger/screams, bands like August Burns Red, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Chariot, Defeater, Converge (probably my favorite at the moment), La Dispute, Between the Buried and Me, etc.

Currently listening to the new He Is Legend and Monuments. Surprisingly enjoy both of them and would recommend.

Someone already said it, but love all the bands mentioned save maybe Opeth. The Fall of Troy was fun live before I knew who they were, I think they were with Foxy Shazam or something. Deftones let me down live the one time I saw them, but White Pony is top 10 album for me. I'd recommend Thank You Scientist if you're falling off of metalcore into math (see it frequently in the metal community). It's a jazz-fusion rock style where literally all the members are extremely talented. Warned though they employ violins, trumpets, saxophones, into their music.

Edit: Here's a link to one of their jams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGvDpr13U2s

"Anyone Into Heavy Metal?"

Yessir, typical elitist asshole here. Here's a list I put together for the early work of the Heavy Metal/NWOBHM genre:

[Heavy Metal]

Black Sabbath
- Black Sabbath (1970)
- Paranoid (1970)
- Master of Reality (1971)
- Vol. 4 (1972)

Judas Priest
- Sad Wings of Destiny (1976)
- Sin After Sin (1977)
- Stained Glass (1978)

Iron Maiden
- Killers (1981)
- The Number of the Beast (1982)
- Piece of Mind (1983)

Motorhead
- Overkill (1979)
- Bomber (1979)
- Ace of Spades (1980)

Mercyful Fate & King Diamond
- Melissa (1983)
- Don't Break the Oath (1984)
- Abigail (1987)
- Them (1988)

Candlemass
- Nightfall (1987)
- Ancient Dreams (1988)
- Tales of Creation (1989)

Honorable Gems
Satan - Court in the Act (1983)
Angel Witch - Angel Witch (1980)
Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations (1980)
Manilla Road - Crystal Logic (1983)
Dio - Holy Diver (1983)

Might as well throw in the thrash/speed metal list in as well.

[Speed/Thrash Metal]

Note: Some of these can be contested, in the sense that one in the know might argue that some titles are more suitable to be listed under a death metal list. That line of thinking is not without merit, as pinpointing the specific point in which the wave of music ceases to be incredibly harsh thrash metal and full blown death metal can be problematic. That's partly why you get so many of us jagoffs entering the battlefield; arguing over which extra adjective goes where. Anyway...

Metallica
- Kill Em' All (1983)
- Ride the Lightning (1984)
- Master of Puppets (1986)

Slayer
- Show No Mercy (1983)
- Haunting the Chapel EP (1984)
- Hell Awaits (1985)
- Reign in Blood (1986)
- South of Heaven (1988)

Megadeth (sigh...)
- Killing Is My Business...And Business is Good! (1985)
- Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? (1986)
- Rust In Peace (1990)

Sepultura (this is where that Death/Thrash sh*t comes into play)
- Morbid Visions (1986)
- Schizophrenia (1987)
- Beneath The Remains (1989)

Kreator
- Pleasure to Kill (1986)
- Coma of Souls (1990)

Exhorder (everything Pantera wishes they could be)
- Slaughter the Vatican (1990)
- The Law (1992)

Voivod
- Killing Technology (1987)
- Dimension Hatross (1988)
- Nothingface (1989)

Honorable Gems
Nuclear Assault - Game Over (1986)
Destruction - Infernal Overkill (1985)
Artillery - By Inheritance (1990)
Obliveon - From This Day Forward (1990)
Exodus - Bonded By Blood (1985)
Vio-lence - Eternal Nightmare (1988)
Demolition Hammer - Epidemic of Violence (1992)

I listen to metal and so does a casual female friend of mine from New Jersey. As for the bands I listen to, the answer varies, but Fear Factory's Mechanize album sounds impressive to me and I also miss the old-school metal sound from the 90s and older.
