So you're watching an anime and you stumble across a character you quite like or find interesting, and eventually becomes one of your favorite characters. Then you find out that the majority of the anime fan base hates them and you kinda feel a bit left out for liking them. I'm sure we've all had that moment.

So which character do you love but everyone else hates?

Mine is Deidara. No one respects his art, but I do.

Also please respect each others choices. We've all got our own opinions here.

My major one is FMA's Shou Tucker. The divide between his meek, unassuming personality and the twisted things he does makes him incredibly creepy, so I thought he was a great character, but I later learned that he's pretty much universally loathed by the fanbase. Understandable, I guess, but I don't see why the "cool" villains get a free pass while legitimately unsettling characters like Tucker just get hated on.

That has to do with a lot of things. "Cool" villains as you put it, have a flare to them. They are strong, goal driven, and are usually very charismatic. Someone like Shou Tucker on the other hand is mostly just a worm that has no real regard for anything, and has absolutely no charisma what so ever. All he ends up being is everything wrong with humanity in general, and it is ugly even for a villain in a series. Also, child abuse isn't funny, no matter the villain for most people. I know it isn't for me. Same reason I pretty much despise Medusa from Soul Eater, despite the fact that she is one of the best villains ever.

i think Shou Tucker is a great answer to this thread... after the whole Nina thing + the internet meme behind it, I'd think everyone hates him.

But Naruto and Deidara...? I thought people LOVE those guys.

You'd be surprised how many characters I like that are well-hated.

Rossiu Adai of TTGL

Misguided and at times petty? Yes. But he was still a world leader carrying a massive burden and suffering for it.

Neferpitou of Hunter x Hunter

Granted the character has a loyal fanbase, but Pitou also receives a lot of vocal hate. I love Pitou's deadliness, cheerfulness, utter loyalty, and character development.

Matako Kijima of Gintama

Her fangirling of Shinsuke annoys a lot of people, but I find her a ton of fun.

Leda of Casshern Sins

She's the least popular of the three robots, but if you look back, she's just as well developed as a character.

Mitsumine Hakuya from Mikakunin de Shinkokei AKA Engaged to the Unidentified. A lot of people complain that he's boring and has no personality, but as a rare male dandere, I think Hakuya has quite a lot of personality- he just doesn't express it much. He's boggled by standard social conventions and the latest technology, but he's one smooth operator when it comes to wooing his lady and is far more proactive in the matter than any idiotic harem lead could claim to be. He genuinely loves Kobeni and wants to do everything he can to make her happy...a real stand-up guy.

There's also Hakase from Nichijou. I don't know if she's hated, but everywhere I go I hear nothing but people talking about what a rotten brat she is. But that's why I like her! I usually hate children in anime, especially girls, because they're often portrayed as unbearably cuddly and cute and packed full of sugar...but real kids aren't like that at all 90% of the time. They're selfish and whiny and high-handed when it comes to getting their way. So I really like Hakase for being a realistic child, genius or not.

not everyone, and probably only even up to 50% (of people who watched the show) actually hate them.

- sasuke (Naruto)... I find him interesting for most parts of the show. but now he's being turned into an ideal model citizen type of character just like his friend Naruto. I hate it when authors turn their characters into "idealized" version of what they think a human should be like instead of letting that character appear to have a free will.

- Makoto (School days)... I find that this character is an accurate representation of a real life person. and I like realism.

- Tomoko (watamote), a very unique character. this is the reason why I like watching anime, you wouldn't be able to find this type of character outside of anime... an accurate representation of a shut-in, I suppose. she's just a decent girl who wants some friends... but due to the structure of society, it's near impossible for her to attain that.

- Shiina (Pet girl of sakurasou)... I don't really understand why fans of the show hate her. because she is the MAIN reason why I like the show. funny and individualistic.

Shinji Ikari. Great subtle character development over the course of the series.
