I was initially really excited about this update and immediately went to install it. But it is the worst and I really wish I could go back to the older version of it. I'm a really big fan of crunchyroll and its content, and I've been committed to you guys. However, this update really really really ruins my viewing experience and comfort.

Cons.
1. First off, not being able to restart an episode from the beginning with one click is really cumbersome. The only way to restart an episode from the beginning is to continuously press the rewind button until you reach the beginning. Who has time for that? Life happens and it can take you away from the TV and an episode restart is necessary. And I am a big fan of rewatching episodes of shows that I adore like Gintama.

2. The loss of convenience concerning the favorites/queue list. I would like to be able to select whatever episode I want from a show like Gintama. It's a show that has so many wonderful stand alone episodes and sometimes you just want pick episodes you're in the mood for. Like what others have said, it is a real step backwards to have to go through a roundabout way to pick a favorite episode via alphabetical list. To pick an episode, the new app makes you scroll through a long list before you get to the show you want.

3. The new app is definitely slower on my Roku 3.

4. I liked the old way of being able to rewind/fast forward by selecting what frame you want to go back to. The new app is also so much slower at rewinding and fast forwarding.

Pros
1. Showing your entire library.

I hope you will listen to your customers and at least improve upon the favorites option and episode restart.

I have not watched enough to see if there is a noticeable difference in HD, but the loading of a show now takes three times as long. It also send impossible to skip ahead (like to pass the opening credits) like before.

Not a fan so far.

Please make it work again. The old interface had some problems but not as bad as this.
I played the first episode of a series but it won't go to the next one.
Can you add a way to skip to the next episode when it doesn't automatically play it?

I really would take the old app back in a heart beat. I don't even notice much difference in the video quality. Those two dots just got into a lot of the more prolific complainers heads, and they didn't ever stop to think about how with decent encoding, a lower bit rate can still give off a fairly high quality stream.

A great Roku app is what made me fall in love with Crunchyroll, without it I feel like I might as well cancel when my membership is up in December and just go with Hulu. This is the first time since joining the site in 2012 that I've even contemplated such a thing.

From what I'd heard about this app during development, the only marked difference was supposed to be a higher quality stream, and that we'd be losing the thumbnails. So this new, rather poorly designed UI and a completely jacked up queue system is really coming out of left field.

Thank you for the update and everything. But, the UI does resemble the PS3 app now. Please do something to fix the episodes so that we can go back and watch without having to go through the goat rope of searching for previous episodes.

If the developers can get that fixed and the searching through the episodes that you are watching I think that this would work out just fine. if not, please allow a way that app on the ROKU can be rolled back.

Thanks!

I hate that there is three ads instead of one it takes out the enjoyment that I once had before. Sorry.

I agree with the first part of this. Being able to scroll around the series page of series in the queue was one of the better features of the Roku app. I feel like I've been thrown into a Beta test that I hadn't signed up for.

As far as the change in the UI, I don't really care, but I don't like to lose options that I use quite a bit. It would be one thing if there was a series page option in the main menu when you have an episode up in the queue or the history, but having the search be the only way to get to a series page is not how I prefer to do things when settling in for the evening to watch some anime before going to sleep.

I don't yet know whether I had HD, or whether I needed to change my default PC setting to get HD on my Roku, as I couldn't tell any change in quality on my 720p bedside TV.

The first time I learned that the old Roku app didn't have HD, I was in some anime chat room and had a lengthy argument with another user because until that time I had been firmly convinced that it was HD already. I was watching season 1 of SAO at the time, and I thought it looked just as good on my Roku as it did on my computer or my Xbox. I just couldn't see the difference at all enough to notice it. But people have complained about it so often, I must be going blind or something!

So much depends on which anime series, how big the TV is, how far away from the television you sit, etc. I was able to see a real difference between the different free Roku channels that use 360p to save money and the Crunchyroll Roku at 480p ... but not all that much between the Crunchyroll 480p and the Netflix or the HBO2GO.

Thing is, though, that Netflix and HBO2GO both autoscale, so maybe I was getting 480p sometimes and 720p sometimes.

And maybe the anime I was watching takes shortcuts in its animation and the next one I watch will look like a big improvement.

Its not a big issue with me, as much as having access to the series episode list directly from the queue.

Got the update when I went to another channel through my Roku 3. Wish I didn't have to re-enter an activation code again.

Can you add a way to skip to the next episode when it doesn't automatically play it?

Pop the show to the top of your /home/queue using a web browser using the up arrow to the left of the show, then exit the CR app after each episode finishes. When you go back in, it will have advanced to the next episode and you can just press the OK button to play it because you had bounced it to the top. Kind of a pain to go out and in each time, because of the startup lag, but actually one less button push than before, where you had to go right, then hit OK twice to start the next one.

Yes, autoplay would have been a welcomed feature, and I too wish they hadn't changed the queue behavior to just be a "most recent episode playlist".

This update is really disappointing. I would much rather have the old app back.

  • like many of the other posters, the inability to navigate to episodes without doing a fresh search is a major step backwards for me.
  • I still haven't figured out how to remove something from the queue. Maybe I need to search for it by name firstt, like the convoluted way of adding something.
  • the back button doesn't work at times. Sometimes, the up button is the back button. There's a back button on the remote for a reason.

I really get the feeling that the UI wasn't designed with the Roku in mind.

Give me the old app back. Not being able to press OK and skip frames quickly for fast forward and rewind kills the experience. Really hate the UI. HD isn't worth the trade off. It looked fine before.
