Howdy all!

SO! The new app is here, and obviously there is A LOT of work to do.

I've been reading through all threads, and pulling feedback / criticism / issues as I find them, but I want to try to get things going in a single place, so that it's easier for our Development Team to reference.

In this thread, please post feedback / criticism / issues.
Please try to be as detailed as possible when relaying what it is you are happy, unhappy, experiencing issues with.

Please do not post 'I hate it.'. That does not help us figure out what to fix / improve.
Please let us know 'I hate that I can no longer access the full list of shows for a series from my queue.'.
This is an actionable item, and helps us identify what's wrong!

I'll try to chime in now and again in this thread, but please know that we're keeping an eye on all venues as far as feedback goes & already working to improve the new Roku experience!

Best,
-Bjaker

I can ONLY see my queue and history, I can't get to top icons, can't get other episodes or browse anime anymore. I am really missing the ease and convenience of the old channel for my Roku. I do have an older Roku player, limited buttons but still, it worked fine before

The biggest thing that needs fixing is to make the queue show pages have the same navigation capabilities (the star button shows a synopsis, and gives you an episode list or a remove from queue choice) as when you search or browse the full anime lists.

Second most important is to have a "play from start" choice for each episode.

Third would be to be able to have the frame skips like the old app had to be able to jump to a place in the show (be able to skip intros)

Nice would be (didn't have these before, either):
Optional Autoplay like the web player
Choice of stream resolution instead of just assuming HD (or a configurable place on your profile, like exists for the web player).

Edit:
Really Really nice would be to have multiple user-definable queues: /forumtopic-836061/collected-queue-suggestions-wishes-and-thoughts but I realize that is a much bigger deal requiring website changes as well...

Second edit: Reactions to this have been pretty extreme... Here's a practical suggestion:

Roll back the prior app and make this one available as a separate "hidden" beta channel, one that you can enter a code such as CRBETA or something to add rather than to have it directly available in the channel store. That way you can make changes quickly and have a bunch of people who would instead view this in a positive light because they are now helping instead of being put upon. Having a beta channel instead would give you useful feedback instead of venom, and it would still make the HD available to those who wanted that so badly.

It's confusing to use the play button to navigate to the main menu. Feels like a bad design decision. I've never seen anything like that on the Roku before.

The fact that the queue doesn't update after you watch a show means you have to exit the app altogether after each episode is finished. This is one of the most major issues with the app as it stands.

As has already been said, no access to the full list of shows in my queue is a pain.

I was prepared for rewind/fast forward to lose the thumbnails. I made my peace with that. But the new implementation is weird and unlike any other roku app I've ever used. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to hold the button down while rewinding. It feels like a major step backwards from the previous app.

1 thank you for the greatest response possible.

2 if possible please minimize the thumbnails when scrolling through shows and episodes. Th e larger thumbnails make is rolling through take longer than it should.

3 although the last categories (genre) sections tended to lump everything together, they were helpful in picking out shows. Please try to bring back the anime categories. If possible please have them better organized this time.

4 does the server choose what video quality is best? As a person who suffers Time Warner cable I'm sad to say my high speed internet connection isn't always reliable for HD.

Thank you for your fast response and hard work!

when at the "Home" screen I would prefer a list of thumbnails for each series in my que (showing the series title art instead of how it is now "showing the latest episode of the series in my que"), then I want to be able to select one of the Series thumbnails to see a list of seasons and episodes in that series (like the previous app) "having it select the latest episode by default is still a good feature tho"

and it would make more sense if the Main Menu button was set as the default Roku Settings button * (instead of the "Play" button which doesn't make as much sense)

also I think it would be better if some of the links on the Main menu (once you press the play button and the Main menu pops up) were instead listed on the left side of your home screen (along with the already existing options "My Queue, History") I would add:
Anime
Drama
Search

that way the only links on the Main menu would be "Home, Settings, & Help"

I also think "genres" should be an option on the left side menu when browsing Anime and Drama. as it is now it only list:
Popular
Simulcasts
Updated
Alphabetical
(I see that "genres" are still listed in the search menu, but it wont allow you to leave the search field blank so you can see all the results in that genre)

also it's strange that you can't return to a previous menu with the "Back" button on the roku controller (Example: I'm on my Home screen, then I press the play button and select Anime. but I then want to return to the previous screen I was on "Home" so instead of just hitting "Back" I have to repeat the entire process over again: Hit the play button to pull up the main menu then select home, just to return to where I was a second before.)

Big supporter but I'm afraid this update fails on a variety of fronts. And, if it's worth anything, I'm both a software engineer and designer... this is neither change aversion nor biased opinion.

Rollout: Please document common use cases and manually QA. This update is DOA for the primary use case of watching one episode after another. Also, re-certification of the channel is clearly a mistake. I'm not as familiar with Roku application dev but I'd assume there's a local DB you could have migrated that data from. As painful as it'd be, I'd suggest pushing the old binary until core issues are resolved.

Features: This is a non trivial reduction in feature set.
  • Not being able to select episodes from your queue needs to be fixed. That's core functionality.
  • Arrow scanning missing. Most series have long + fixed intros. No one wants to watch them more than twice. You can typically remember how many clicks to get to the end of the sequence or use the thumbnails to identify when to stop (however, those thumbnails were often two steps away from accurate, always wished that were corrected). Please don't force us to use fast forward
  • Unable to remove item from queue. In fact, there's no menu for a given show at all from the queue.

UX: The layout and button mappings are just wrong. This feels like one experience optimized for a given environment being shoe-horned into an altogether different environment with different capabilities and patterns...
  • The play button should never be used for the menu. You wouldn't need onscreen help if you used the star or just allowed navigation to a menu element
  • Conflating actions at bottom. The "OK select" appears next to "<< >> first/last", the implication is that they act in the same context. One is for the given selection, the other mutates your location on the list... you can stretch it to say they're both list manipulation but it doesn't feel that way in practice. My first thought was that >> would move me to the last episode of the selected series.
  • Un reachable nav elements. This is infuriating, it's laid out as though using the up arrow would get you to that section and you'd be able to nav to the other views.
  • Duplicate nav items. Two identical icons with no differentiating text? Seriously?
  • Odd pixelation of snapshots. The representative image for each episode has jagged lines at both the resting and selected state.
  • Non-animated state change. Up and down between queue and history is jarring. You need to animate the state change so that it doesn't feel as though it's a view refresh
  • New or not. This is a pre-existing issue but it's not clear if there are unwatched episodes in your queue. The overlaid star is sometimes present on old episodes and sometimes the episode advances to "coming soon"
  • The help text appears to be a lie or is not consistent across all views. I've tried the back button in a variety of cases and had it do nothing (including the help screen).
  • No way to get complete description. Again, a pre-existing issue. Descriptions often overflow the space and end up with an ellipses. However, there's no way to get the expanded text without going to the website as far as I'm aware.

That's what I've got so far. I haven't been able to use it enough to get a complete sense of the rough edges.

Seconding the "thanks for the prompt attention."

Things that would make the Roku app "functional" for me again:
>easy access to all available episodes of a show in my queue (ex. if I want to watch episode 6 of Samurai Flamenco even though 15 is the last one I watched, I should be able to get there directly from my queue)
>ability to start an episode from the beginning OR where I last left off

It is kind of nice having the most recent episodes of my show available directly from the home screen; maybe there could be a stripe of "your latest episodes" and "all your shows" below that? But it's really the difficulty accessing older episodes that's the killer for me, because I value Crunchyroll as both a library and a source of brand-new simulcasts. If this is addressed, I'd be pretty well satisfied, and everything else would be gravy.

I'd like to start by saying I am not one of the "New things are inherently bad" crowd. A lot of the things in this update are interesting, if a little different than most of the users are used to. Some things are straight up better, such as the HD upgrade. That being said...

In addition to not having an easy way to watch an earlier episode of a series, (as in the case of showing a show to a friend), there is also a problem when you are caught up on a currently airing series. For example, Kill la Kill has as its thumbnail "Next episode not available yet" or however it's worded, and is totally un-interactible. I suppose it is possible that I am missing something, but the number of buttons on a roku remote are limited, and I've tried them all.

This one is from holistic. (Also you were a bit harsh and condescending. We are being helped here no need for that.)

I actually love the non animated transitions.
It's smooth and doesn't jar my eyes at all. It feels snappy.
I've noticed since the update episodes there are a few freezes happening. I'm guessing it's a time warner issue, but it might also be the Hd thing.

For shows that have subs and dubs would it be possible to have the choice to switch at the episode screen?

Thanks again!

Remote access on a Roku 3 is broken. Using the Roku 3 RF remote works fine. HOWEVER When using the left/right arrow with an infra-red remote (yes, the Roku 3 has an IR receiver) to work through your queue, a single quick press can sometimes scroll you 2 entries in your queue or more. You need to 'debounce' the remote keys.

This makes the channel completely unusable for those of us with universal remotes.

First off, this isn't a Change is bad post but...

The old app was very thoughtfully designed, and I think the majority of people using it liked it quite a bit. The biggest criticism was the lack of HD.

The new app finally gives us better picture quality, but the gui is (in my opinion) a step backwards in terms of functionality. I think the best possible outcome here would be an app based on the old layout with HD added.

Wow, 7 (SEVEN) pre-roll ads before an episode? I know you need to make money, but SEVEN pre-rolls, where most of them were duplicates?

For me I prefered the old app alot more, more user friendly so if you could revert back to that but add HD then that would be perfect.

My MAIN problem though is that not a single episode is loading for me, it either just stays on the loading screen or comes up an error message. I have switched off my box numerous times incase that was the problem, but it was not, i checked my internet speed and theres nothing wrong with that. So it must be the app that will not load any episodes. So i'd be very grateful if you could get it working for me so I can actually use my box again, as I am having to revert back to messing with my laptop and connecting up my HDMI cable which is a hassle.

What I would like to suggest however, would be a option within the apps settings that allows you to decide what quality the images should be. As some people may struggle to load 1080p, so being able to set it at 720p would making streaming alot easier for them

I agree with all of the above points 100%.

One other thing I would mention would be the video quality. The first few times I tried to use the new app, the video quality was horrendous (we're talking super-pixelated picture, garbled audio bad). I don't know if this was something with the app itself or what (it wasn't my Internet connection; I pulled up a video on Netflix and it played fine). In any case, it appears to have fixed itself as I watched something in the last hour and it worked fine, though time will tell.

Thanks for setting up this thread for feedback, guys!
