I know someone suggested adding autoplay. If you guys at CR decide to add that functionality please also add the ability to disable said autoplay functionality. I hate autoplay.

OK I have now had chance to watch an episode and to play around a but more.

I am finding the playback a lot snappier than the old app. Let me put is this way... I select an episode, and it plays (every time) in under five seconds. In the old app it would take at least ten seconds to decide if it would even play or not.

Apart from some odd button choices (and lack of More Options) the UI makes a lot of sense to those of us familiar with the layout on other apps. Personally, I think this is a strength. But I can see how people who only use Roku would find this a step backwards. The missing extra functionality will understandable mean more to them than being constituent with something they don't use.

A the choice weather or not to restart, and the progress indicator, really should exist across all platforms. And maybe a little bit more platform-specific variation would be nice. You can have a constant experience without every app being a carbon copy of the others. Have a design style but keep menu options relevant to the target platform. In this case, fewer buttons.

But when it comes down to actually playing an episode, this is currently ranked second in my TV-connected gear - after AppleTV. PS3 ranks third (episodes don't always play) and Xbox 360 last (skipping chunks = BAD)

Howdy all!

SO! The new app is here, and obviously there is A LOT of work to do.

-It's much slower (especially if you have shows with episodes "Coming Soon" in your queue. (Speaking of which, whose "bright" idea was it to get rid of the cover art which was stable throughout the run of a show and instantly recognizable ?" (Not to mention the huge size of the cards and the useless left bar mean you can only see two series at a time now.)

- Seriously, the only way to see older episodes of a current simulcast is to search for it? Who thought it was a good idea to destroy one of the most basic functions of the app?

- We've lost the ability to easily start a show again from the beginning. (Another basic core function.)

- It's very counterintuitive, not the least because in one of the "hit x button to do that thing" notices... the "x button" graphic matches no button on my remote.

- Why the heck is that useless and mostly blank left hand bar taking up so much of my screen acreage? (Bad UI designer! Bad! No biscuit for you!)

- It now takes, for no apparent reason, two or more buttons to work through my queue because it no longer loops.

- We've lost the "framed" previews when fast forwarding or rewinding, make it much more difficult to find a particular place/scene in the show.

Etc... etc...

This is way beyond "needs a lot of work" and well into "roll back" territory. The app isn't just mildly dysfunctional, it's essentially broken with significant core functionality missing.

The app asked me to reactivate, which I did. Now in 'devices' in my account I have TWO Roku boxes. (It's the same one twice) Is this going to cause problems?

I am going to just link the thread I started rather than write it all out again: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-862627/cr-roku-app-update-thoughts-and-problems.

Others have also posted their thoughts on it as well in that thread, at least some. Between all of us that have posted so far I would say we have covered a good portion of the glaringly big problems for us all.

The one thing I will actually write again though... or rather copy and paste in here... from my thread is this:

**UPDATE 3: Current and Final Thoughts after 12 or so hours of using this app post update**
As it currently stands, the app update is not awful. It is not good. But it is not by far the worst thing there is.

The current set up CR has implemented with this update is for daily simulcast use. It is painfully obvious they did not set this up expecting people to binge watch through multiple episodes of one series, rewatch any shows, or have a reason to go back to the beginning of a show.

It is perfect probably if all you do is watch simulcasts, and keep up with them every week.

You get on the app, you watch your shows for the day/week, get out of the app to use a different part of the Roku, come back another day/next week and watch again. The app works the same as the last version where it tracks where you left off, so if you finish an episode, it will go to the next, this works perfectly for simulcasts, you watch the episode, get out of the app, the app "updates" so the next episode will be ready. You would only do this once a week for simulcasts so it wouldn't be jarring at all.

The downside is this effects all shows. So you can not binge watch shows without having to get off the app and start it back up, after every single episode. So every 20 or so mins you would have to get out of the app, back in, start the next episode, with all the loading this takes, it can easily take 15-30 seconds per episode just to do this, probably longer.

I'm sure in time, most of us will get used to this feature, but I really do hope us users can push CR to get a fix in, there NEEDS to be a better way to move between episodes right now for series we are binge watching, rewatching, or have a lot of episodes. Going to the search function for something in your queue seems way too roundabout, as well as the fact I don't want to have to close the app and restart it after EVERY episode.

Really the biggest downside right now seems to just be the navigation for me. Everything else is not that big of an annoyance, or an improvement.

As I stated there, the app is as far as I can tell near perfect. IF you only use it for daily simulcast use.

Without being able to change episodes within the app, at least easily, it is meant to be used in a manner of: Watch the days simulcasts, drop out of the app, use Roku for other services. Rinse, Wash, and Repeat the next day.

It is utterly useless as it stands though if you are watching a completed show, rewatching a show, or if you happen to fall behind by a week or two in simulcasts, without the option to switch between episodes it is just not meant to work like that.

I have to say the navigation and setup was perfect, for me at least, on the old version, I just wanted HD. HD was not a big enough trade off though to lose all the navigation we had before, as well as the other small minor annoyances, like the jarring thumbnails, no genre searching, the round about way to get an episode list, and the out of the way (in my opinion) Menu bar.

I hope we can get this pushed soon for an update to fix at least the major problems. But preferably all the problems (even though even I as a programmer know that is like asking to find the Fountain of Youth, IT AIN'T HAPPENIN)

1. Please move the menu button from the play/pause button to the star button.
2. Have episodes in queue auto update when viewed to display the next episode.
3. Bring back genre browsing please.
4. On my views the thumbnails of the shows seem choppy looking.
5. Have suggestion list pop up when typing in a search query.

I'm a premium user on Crunchyroll and also subscribe to Funimation, Hulu and Netflix. Out of all of these services the crunchyroll app was simply THE BEST hands down for the Roku. Or it was until this update, which literally had me cursing. We had family over and it took 20 minutes just to relink the device and then figure out how to get to one of the older episodes of a show that we wanted to show them.

As for details:

1) We have a HUGE queue, well over a 100 titles, our current options are to scroll from the first item, or scroll from the last item. In the old version, at least we had a 'skip by page' option when hitting the fast forward and rewind keys, that didn't work for us in the new version.

2) The queue only displays the most recent episodes and doesn't provide a way of selecting a previous episode

3) The loss of the episode list for each show is a major loss. It was nice to be able to scroll through all the episodes to select the one you want to watch (there are some that we watch over and over because the kids love them). It was also nice that it remember the position that you were in within a show as well (so we could instantly skip to the 'good stuff').

4) The interface is totally non-intuitive. It took forever to figure out to hit the 'play' button to get to where we needed to be, just to make more selections. The old interface worked well with Roku device, please reinstate that.

I really, REALLY, just want the old app back, we have a big screen TV, but really don't care about HD (we don't use it on Funimation either). We just want a GOOD application.

We're already paying for a subscription, I would seriously consider an additional fee just to get the 'OLD' application back. Just let us know how much to pay.

1) The new interface is counter-intuitive and NOT very user unfriendly.
2) The tiny screen instructions are not good for those of us with less than perfect eye sight.
3) You can not play an episode from the beginning again without rewinding the entire episode and even then it didn't work for me.
4) The video is very scratchy and if this was coming in on my DirecTV I'd say something was interfering with the signal.
4) Extreme lag between button pushed and system response.
5) The designer of the update forgot the key system command: KISS - Keep It Simple; Stupid. The old version was KISS exemplified.
6) The system colours are GARISH. Orange and black? Is this a Halloween prank?

Frankly I am very angry over this and considering withdrawing my support of Crunchyroll. At least for the time being to show my displeasure. However, that being said, I doubt I will unless no reasonable effort is made to resolve these difficulties. But I remain angry .

It shouldn't, but on my account I just deactivated the older one (the one with older activation date) to avoid any possible confusion.

First of all, navigating is an utter horrible chore in every way imaginable. Nothing is clearly marked, icons are too large, options have been removed. How should it be? The old way. Even if you have a visual redesign the old functionality should still be how it was. You didn't add anything, only removed. Where is the episode list for the shows? How could you possibly not include that? Why can't I just naturally cycle from the beginning of the cue backward to the end?

Second, I am on a slow DSL internet connection. Crunchyroll used to play on connections as low as 0.4mbps. Now it's stopping to load extremely frequently on my 1.0mbps connection. Have the lower bitrate loading options been disabled? It's unwatchable for me now. I can't do anything about my internet connection where I live; it is what it is. This is why I cancelled Funimation.

This is not how you treat paying customers. If this isn't fixed soon I will stop giving you money. I cannot believe this update went live in this state. Did you even test the thing? Did you?

My biggest complaint is that it is abundantly clear that no one who developed the app actually uses it, or else they would never have made anyone else use it:

This is the most infuriating part to me. They so obviously did no testing with people who actually use the app on a regular basis. Or the testers were all cowardly yes men idiots too scared to give any actual feedback.

(Rant)
And I noticed something very interesting. It appears it is the PAYING customers who are the angriest. This is not how you win friends and influence enemies. I will also agree that it appears very little beta testing was done. If this was April 1st I'd say this was an April's fool prank played on us. I would like somebody from CrunchyRoll to please explain to us why they thought this was a good idea. I make this plea seriously. Please revert to the previous version and send the upgrade back to be improved and get some users to beta test the new version when it is ready. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea?

As unhelpful as I probably sound, I'd just like to be able to watch videos again please.

The update means the app won't work for me any more, I'm using a Now TV Box with the app downloaded from Roku.
I could watch anime fine before the app updated but now I'm getting videos stuck on 99% loading or finishing loading only to say 'couldn't play video'.

It's quite upsetting to say the least when you're paying for a service that you can't use. I would watch anime on the actual site but don't have access to it, I only usually use Crunchyroll through my phone or Now TV.

Baker,

It would be very helpful to have a private channel for testing as revisions are being made. A good example to follow is how Plex made available a private test channel. They also have a beta forum group for feedback. This would be a valuable tool to the development team.

My suggestion, should CR wish to incorporate customer feedback, would be to model implement this soon rather than later.
