Let's focus on what we have to do to get by for now, shall we?. There are plenty of threads if all you want to do is complain (so please don't do that here in this one), and notably, one by CR themselves, if you want to offer constructive criticism. But read it first, most everything has already been covered...probably.

  • Harmony remote users read this: /forumtopic-862631/roku-update-doesnt-work-properly-with-logitech-harmony#47491811
  • Now TV users, there's a thread for you, but it's not a happy one so far. /forumtopic-862605
  • Free users, there's a bug that makes you watch too many pre-roll ads. Sorry, that's something CR will need to address in a hurry if they don't want to lose viewership. Unfortunately, I don't have any workarounds for that here. Small consolation to say it wasn't intended; there should only have been one as before.

So on to how to do stuff, without any (further) commentary on how un-roku-esque this app is now. This is all based on my Roku 3, so apologies if these instructions don't work on older models.

Highly recommended to obtain:

Basic navigation : Home screen: Queue and History stripes.

Advanced navigation: Anime (Drama similar)

Advanced navigation: Search

The queue, what good is it now?

That is the largest amount of need-to-look-up instructions on how to use something that should be intuitive I've ever seen. Kudos for putting all this together. It's a real shame it has to be done.

Unfortunately none of that is useful for me because the app doesn't play anime properly. It stops to buffer every few seconds. The old one didn't and Netflix and Hulu don't. As much as the app interface sucks I'd grudgingly learn to use it using the above list of stuff if I could just watch anime at all.

  • You are on the "All Anime" dropdown. (apparently you can't search for J/K dramas)

  • Once you have the "Search by Anime Genre" dialog open, the fast forward or rewind buttons will switch it to drama (and back).

Another counter-intuitive operation, as you would think it would think any switching would take place before you opened the search dialog.

Thanks, added this into the OP.

I have made a post that outlines a couple options for Roku users to provide quite a bit of the functionality we are used to having with CR on Roku. While this does not address how to use the CR Roku app, it provides other options to use your Roku to view CR anime and drama shows without resorting to remembering obscure key pressings on the Roku remote.

One other tip when watching a show a quick press of the FF button will perform a short skip and start playing again. This is useful for skipping intro songs. This has only been tested on my Roku 3. The skip and restart is very fast and to me actually works better than the thumbnails used to as they often where not accurate as to where you would restart.

  • The "Pause" (Play) button opens a navigation menu

  • Use the Right arrow to go to "Anime", then "OK" to see four choices: Popular, Simulcasts, Updated, Alphabetical

  • Navigate to the stripe you want with up/down

  • Star (asterisk) opens a description/episode list/add (or remove) queue action

  • I have an older model Roku and have no asterisk (star) on my remote, anyone know of another way to be able to add/delete anime, or see a description? (Without getting on a computer)

I think I remember seeing at that point holding down the OK button for a few seconds works.

Could you add that when you have selected a show that has multiple seasons, you use the up and down buttons to see the different seasons.

That's an interesting behavior. I'm not sure what happens to the free uses if they try it, though. For subscribers it seems to work pretty well.

Also, I had something really odd happen that I can't seem to reproduce now. I tried to be really quick on the rewind to replay an episode, and something I did sent it back to the start almost immediately without holding rewind. I'm going to have to mash buttons awhile until I can find what does that consistently...

I want to note my experience with that quick press FF skip thing.

Sometimes it does skip, others though it restarts the scene you are in, think like BR and there are... chapters or whatever in the movie, like... a particular fight scene is in the 14/22 chapter or whatever, if you are partially through 12, and use the "skip" it goes to 13, but if you immediately try to skip again, it seems to just restart 13 over and over.

That is my experience so far at least.

I've got the Roku XD box. When I finally got search results (dont know how that happened -I had to push all the buttons on the remote multiple times to get the search screen) I was unable to select anything or page forward. I tried all the buttons - no luck . Finally had to use the home button for all my channels. I also noticed Crunchyroll takes a very long time to load when I select it, is this a glitch or the result of the HD upgrade?
I cant find any info about a 'patch' will there be one?

You should report this over in the official thread /forumtopic-862651. This is the second (or possibly third) time I have seen someone report a freeze during a search, but not where they are tracking all the issues. I haven't ever had that happen on my Roku 3, so maybe something in other models has a problem, perhaps memory or something...
