Up until very recently, I'd say Amnesia: The Dark Descent took the cake on terrifying games. The atmosphere, the lack of any way to defend yourself, it was very chilling.

Then the people behind that game thought "Let's take that whole game, and stick it right down at the bottom of the ocean. It's cold, it's dark, it's terrifying not knowing what's down there." My Thalassaphobia went "OH HELL NO! NOPE!" - It's called Soma

Corpse Party and Corpse Party: Book of Shadows.

Best use of sound effects, voice acting, and music in a J-horror game.

(Seriously. Play with good headphones for the full effect.)

The Silent Hill games were very scary back in the day, still to this day actually, but they haven't aged very well so that's a bit of a shame.

I don't know, most other horror games I've ever played were all about jump scares which is about as horrific as your siblings trying to scare you by wearing a white blanket and go "boo"

The underwater parts in Metroid Prime freaked me out in a serious way.

But I still claim the original Silent Hill to be the scariest. Gonna download this PT tonight.

I always stand by Dead Space 1 as the flagship horror game. It's the one I think of when someone mentions horror. Eventually, you get used to the scares, and even if they toss a fresh horror technique at you, you won't be as scared anymore. But I'll never forget my first couple hours with the game, in which I was genuinely terrified. It was midnight, it was dark, I had headphones in, and I was shaken up so much my accuracy was cut in half. But by the last quarter of the game, as with many horror games, I was just having a blast chopping up necromorphs into little pieces with my trusty plasma cutter. Dead Space 2 was great as well. Dead Space 3, lol Dead Space 3 felt like a straight up action game to me. It was like CoD zombies or Dead Rising in terms of fear (as in basically none). When you see zombies now, you're not scared, you actually look forward to blowing them all up and that's exactly how I felt about necromorphs in DS3.

^^Right? dead space will always be my favorite horror game..first time playing the first one had me on needles! so scary! of course it got very predictable toward the end and the 3rd game wasnt the best or even scary at all..but the 1st one definitely had its own special atmosphere to it...that USG Ishimura man -__-

Outlast was great fun! it was scary at first but quickly got repetitive..honestly i just enjoyed playing it though. I thought about it like a thriller in a way more than a horror game but it was still very scary at some points :). as for PT...NOPE! cant finish it..too scared....im a chicken when it comes ti scary games in case you havent realized...and PT is just too realistic and creepy..i may never finish silent hills Dx
