It's almost like you all expected something close to normal with Ikuhara at the helm.

The subs were pretty awful, but I was...very much less than impressed by this episode. Please let me list my grievances:

* Shoddy actual animation
* Flat characters
* A lot of empty sensation, not much worthwhile actually happening

Right now, the characters are my biggest problem with the show. As oddly satisfying as it is to hear Yui Ogura (adorable Kokona from Yama no Susume) in this as a total lesbian, nobody struck me as being anything more than a plot device. There's nobody to latch on to. I haven't seen Penguindrum, but comparing this to Utena (a wildly unfair comparision, I know)—there's no heart to this show right now. After one episode, I was ready to live and die with Utena because Utena (the character) was just that good. Who do I care about in this show now? Not a soul.

Now, there are definitely some interesting thematic threads getting laid down ("eating as a necessary, unavoidable sin" tops the list), Ikuhara and Silver Link are going to have to work much harder to pull me into this show. Beargirls liking honey off flowers is just spectacle to me, and it doesn't have a core. It's just meaningless decadence.

As for the show being baffling, I can't help but wonder if having seen Utena prepared me for the weirder stuff that happened this episode. In Ikuhara world, this was pretty tame stuff.

Heh, pretty ironic that you would say that considering SHAFT and Shinbo's style is heavily derived from Ikuhara's artistic school. Ikuhara is the original; Shinbo was at J.C. Staff at the same time Ikuhara was there working on Revolutionary Girl Utena and was heavily influenced by Ikuhara's work.

I'm pretty sure that Shinbo and Ikuhara were both influenced by Dezaki, actually.

Definitely true, but I think the timelines of their particular styles definitely show Ikuhara having an influence on Shinbo. Them both being influenced by Dezaki doesn't disqualify that relationship.

Mainly I was just thinking it felt a bit backwards to me to label YuriKuma as SHAFT-like, when chronologically Ikuhara was doing "SHAFT" long before Shinbo and SHAFT were.

But, of course, SHAFT's style is much more well-known, so it makes sense why that connection is drawn. Certainly, a lot of the same techniques are being used in both. Although, I should say, it's pretty interesting to see Ikuhara school techniques show up in shows like Toradora! It's just that having the more mundane, less abstracted settings makes the similarities somewhat less noticeable.

Anime industry bloodlines are so fascinating to trace because the industry is so small. Makes the distinctive trails and intersections much easier to see.

Over on dynasty scans someone commented about how interesting it was that the comments there were all about the direction of the plot, and elsewhere people were bitching about seeing under-aged lesbians kissing lol. I agree with them seeing the interesting comments here.

Especially since it can at times feel like Shinbo is rapidly entering the territory of a "hack", what with his seeming refusal to change his style at all. Kagerou Days was just pitiful, and his directing didn't change that fact much. It didn't work for Nisekoi, either.

Idiots, all of them. They're 17, for goodness sake. That's legal in some parts of America, even.

To be fair to Shinbo, I don't think he has actually directed anything at SHAFT for quite a while (afaik, he didn't personally do Nisekoi or Mekaku City Actors). Kind of like how Urobuchi's name got slapped on Gargantia and A.Z, Shinbo's brand is strong enough to make people pay attention, while other people actually do the directorial work.

My pervading feeling was boredom. I don't mind weird as long as a show is good but to me this one so far is not. Personally I didn't like how they didn't really introduce the characters, and decided to focus purely on sort of introducing the plot. Basically I don't think this was a very good first episode. It did nothing to make me invested in the characters and only vaguely introduced its plot. The OP though is pretty fantastic.

Well... That was something else. Seems interesting though. But also kinda weird.

Let's see how it actually turns out though.
