You're given $100 Million right now and told to pursue what you've always wanted
Posted 8/21/14 , edited 8/21/14
But with one catch. You have to still work.

$100 Million is definitely sustainable for life. You can do whatever you want. You can pursue your dreams. You can move to wherever you've always wanted. You can buy whatever you've wanted. You can do anything. But you still have to work, even if you are now immensely wealthy

I'd just accelerate what I'm working toward right now. Teaching English in Japan/Korea. It's my major, it's my goal in life, it's all I want to do really, but if I was handed $100 Million right now, I wouldn't change the course of what I'm doing I'd just make it go faster.

What about you?

Edit - You're all saying the kindest and most humanitarian things ever, and it's actually amazing to see, meanwhile I said I'd take it all and run to a foreign land. Thanks for making me feel bad

I'd donate my time (and money, of course) to various charities and organisations. I'd have no objection to travelling around the world and helping build housing and finding ways to ensure that water supplies (even if man-made) are closer to some towns in middle of Africa or to ensure that there's some type of peace in certain areas.

(Off-Topic: I recently had the opportunity to teach English in Japan. It's postponed until next school term. But it's definitely something fun and incredible. Hope you can score a way to do some training/on-the-job experience over there when you graduate or about to!)

I'd start a private military corporation they are huge profit makers in this day and age. Buy some great audio equipment and kick back listening to music.

Gah~ I'd finish school with every major I feel like majoring in and then travel the world (or do it all simultaneously). It's my dream to work as an interpreter - could make a business out of it.

Maybe I'll buy an island for myself and plan retirement too. Afterwards, too much leftover money would bother me, so donations to good causes would be in order.

I've abused my powers a little to make the topic a little more attractive. :)

Now to go on topic:
That's an interesting question, what would I do?

I'm not a millionaire nor am I rich, but I am in the fortunate position where I am already living part of my dream.
I have a rather well paying job that I like and the means and resources to do the things I like to do, like travel on a regular basis without having to skim on buying new games/books/movies/etc.

100 Million... I'd likely donate a big part of it to charity, set another part aside for when I am old enough to stop working and of course use a part as suplement to my own pay so that I can do those things which are just a bit out of my (financial) league right now.

I would put animal shelters and help all the dogs and cats on the streets or/and save them from their abuser owners.

I'd also like to become a social worker and make a huge foster home to give abandoned/abused kids the opportunity to be happy. The home will have nice beds, nice food, nice entertainment for the kids and a good education.

In sum, the money would be used to help my family and then to help all the kids and animals I can. That's my dream but right now I have no money at all and I have to eat so I can only help myself

Aww, you'd still have to work. I don't have a job right now but I've always thought one of the big positives of having a ton of money would be how you don't have the trials of work hanging over your head. I guess I'd buy some better recording equipment and VST's to help me with voice over and music, maybe some voice or guitar lessons even. I'd also buy a more powerful computer. Then, in my currently non-existent will, I'd have a percentage of my money go to my brother (assuming he's still alive), and the rest to charity.

First question: Does it have to be a full time job? Cause forget that if I'm handed $100 million.

But, on to the answer, here's what I'd do with the money:
$10 million given to the church right off the bat
$10 million placed in a bank account none of my kids can touch until they're adults (I have 4 children)
$10 million divided evenly to these four charities
- Shriners Hospital for Children - https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/
- Helping Up Mission - https://www.helpingupmission.org/
- Kindred Image http://kindredimage.org/
- Ronald McDonald House Charities - http://www.rmhc.org/
Remainder would be spread between various accounts whereby I can afford to live off the accrued interest. I'd keep working at my current job part time or find a much less mentally invasive part time job to give me more free time (also, more time to think).

Go back to college, buy a decent size home, get a car, help out my mommy and granny, and save the rest.

This thread is a little unfair.

Donate some of the money, give my mom and grandma whatever they want, go to university, travel a bit, and get a nice house.

I would save the rest and continue on working.
