How much research on the place do you do? What certain things do you research about? Were you fully prepared for every and anything that happened while you were there?

I haven't traveled outside the country yet, but recently i traveled to Baltimore MD on my own for the first time. I think the most important thing to me is location/transportation. I need to know where i am, where i'm going and how to get there. My phone with google maps was my friend. I guess some other things to worry about are food and attractions, but if you have the time, it could be fun to just discover things there.

What i wasn't prepared for, was toll money and bus fare. Didn't have enough change for tolls and bus. But then on my last day there i realized the buses accepted bills

Never too much. I've been to lots of places, especially within Europe. Basically, know where you're going and some language. Lots of different ones in Europe xD
A phone you can use overseas is useful, and a guide on the area you're visiting is good. Since I've done it lots before I probably prepare less as I know what to expect from different countries, even if I haven't been to that one specifically yet. Planning is good, and make sure you know as much as you need to!
I guess you could be 'too prepared' but I wouldn't worry. If you're going overseas then a lonely planet guide is always a good bet!
