I didn't even want to watch a video of someone with diarrhea trapped on an elevator for hours because I could feel sympathy pains approaching, having experienced food poisoning.

Wait... Have I always been wrong about Sympathy and Empathy?

I thought Sympathy was when you haven't gone through that persons pain, but you feel bad for them. 'When you haven't been there'

and Empathy was when 'you've actually been there', and you know exactly how it feels.

Am I wrong?

Your not wrong.. Your actually right

It's more like sympathy is feeling sorry for, or understanding another persons pain, empathy is relating to that pain, both are regardless of whether you've experienced similar things or not, although empathy can include the connotation of experiencing the same thing.
[edit] This explains it clearly enough
http://www.diffen.com/difference/Empathy_vs_Sympathy

Empathy is using emotions and experiences from your past with some mental scenario playing in an attempt to understand what another person/being is feeling and deluding yourself into thinking that you actually understand what they are feeling and/or thinking. Sympathy is feeling for the perceived plight of another. Compassion is taking action(s) on your perceived understanding of another's situation in an effort to assist them.

So, you could describe empathy, sympathy, compassion as understand (so you think anyway), feel, do.

Back to the question in the thread. Yes, I've felt sympathy pain, it is quite natural to feel what you imagine that others feel and is part of the brain's automatic attempt to understand them.

Sympathy pain is something I would connect to things like Phantom Limb Syndrome and neuropathic pain.

Something about seeing unpleasant things happen to people/things can cause false signals in the nerves.

I remember one of my friends was poking a biology project- a fetal pig- in the nose with the scalpel and all of a sudden my nose started to feel really strange and I had to tell her to stop poking the pig because I was starting to feel as if someone was putting metal rods up my nostrils.
