Yes, they should because community service shows if a person is a hard-working and helpful person.

Yeah, studying is important but so is skill building and learning time management. It's a rude awakening to find out that being booksmart has its limit. Imo public schools don't do a really good job at preparing students for college for whatever reasons.

Anything that is made mandatory will meet stiff resistance, especially from teenagers who are known to be rebellious. If a student wants to go to college then sure they can volunteer 20-30 hours of their life away a year for a chance to get into one. If they don't, then they shouldn't be required to waste their own time if they know they aren't going to college.

definitely, because there's more to school than recitation and grades although i do think that kids should be able to choose where and whom they'll volunteer for. they shouldn't be coerced to participate and it's important to instill values of altruism rather than having them doing these things just because it's a requirement

I would have no problem with it if it was during school hours versus another thing they tack on. It was mandatory at my high school, which I disliked because it isn't volunteering if it is forced. I suppose on the plus side however it was a good excuse to spend lots of time with adorable baby birds and other critters. I filled my hours during summer breaks when I worked through a wildlife/rescue group and home fostered different babies and other critters that need a lot of constant care.

My high school had a community service requirement as well. It encouraged students to work together and go out of their comfort zone. As much as i disliked it at the time, I suppose it was helpful.

I suppose i'm in favor of mandatory community service. There's no real drawback, and it only gives benefits both to the students and to the community - so why not?

It's not about just going to college. Whatever they decide do to after high school, they're gonna need skillsets anyway.

Unless of course, they're going to be a couch potato.

I've never had to do community service to graduate high school or college. It's seems odd to force kids to do something people are sentenced to do for some crimes. Personally, I'd probably resent it more than see any value in it.

I do community service willingly already. I don't think it should be mandated simply because I know a majority will not show up for it. It's wasteful to try and make teens do something they likely will not.

I volunteer at the animal shelter, but I'm not like most teens. Take time out of the day to drive half an hour to the nearest no kill facility in the city. they run a good place and have kind animals and awesome staff. I thoroughly enjoy it and find it very enriching. Due to my dog's playfully aggressive nature when it comes to cats, I can't have a cat, so I get my cat therapy at the shelter weekly.

I'm a leader in a volunteer club at my school and I don't think volunteering should be mandatory.

Why? Because too often I see volunteers on the job doing absolutely NOTHING or just doing a half-assed job. I can tell they don't want to be there, and I don't want them to be there either. We could get jobs done much faster without them. It would be much better to have people who actually want to volunteer than to force people to volunteer.

Community service doesn't hurt you. And it does give you a permanent relationship with the company for potential job in the future if you're well liked.

When I was in high school, they did make it mandiory to do some community service in order to graduate. But at the end they didn't check if you did do any. Other than that, I think schools should do this and ENFORCE high schoolers to do community service.

If you want to get into a good college community service is a must anyway. Most people do community service to pad their resume than help others.
