Escape From Reality
Posted 8/26/14 , edited 8/26/14
Entertainment and media provide us with the ability to be outside of "ourselves" for a while, to step away from the real life nonsense we deal with all the time and enjoy something. Anime, manga, music, video games. It all does that for us. That's why we're here right now, right?

I'm a guy making money doing what guys making money do, and at the end of my day I want nothing more than to come home from being that, watch some anime, listen to the cheesiest J-Pop there is, maybe dance to some Hatsune Miku and not have to be that guy for a little while.

This is why this stuff is so popular to the salarymen of Japan, so...

Discuss.

Oh and yeah add school to that list, because I do that too and it takes a toll as well.

I watch anime and read manga because it takes my mind off money and school for a while. We all need a break a from reality every now and then.

Virtual Reality will be the greatest escape. Can you imagine how it would feel to someone who wants to escape so badly.

So many people are unsatisfied with this reality, offering an escape as great as VR, I can only imagine the consequences. But at the same time I can also imagine how liberating and awesome it would feel.

I am an over thinker, I can't stop myself from thinking unless I distract myself. I do what I am doing now, replying to forums, reading articles online, checking my email 3-5 times a day, listen to music, watch anime, browse and do little things around the house. Life is something I don't enjoy thinking about and often times, I find myself scaring myself to the point I can't sleep without having something playing in the background or to the point where I don't even recall falling asleep.

I completely agree. If I didn't have the things I love to look forward to when I got home after a long day, I don't know where I would be today.

I often escape to a fictitious world. Whether it be through anime or manga, a good book, a movie/TV show, or even my own story through writing and/or drawing.

As just a high school student, sure, I don't have the heavy burden most adults do. And I might not have a right to complain. But the problems I face sometimes daily take quite a bit of toll on me, and I just need to take a break from it all. Focus on another world with other problems that is also enjoyable.

Same here except for the trouble sleeping. I can force myself to sleep easily and I'm also a heavy sleeper. Sleeping and dreaming are also ways of escaping reality, for me at least.

I think video games are my biggest escape. When I play RPGs I'm not me anymore with my stressful life, I'm a different person on an entirely new adventure. I can be cheerful and happy more easily when I'm away from my real life and I'm being someone else. Anime and Manga also helps but with video games you're actually "living" it.

VR is like a medium, it would engulf everything even porn, which could lead to problems... I suppose

Ew, real life.

I'll just live on the internet.
