I was going to comment something along the lines of this, but Bryaugh beat me to it.

While it may be true that may people do not know the specifics, it is also true that is an average conversation, there is a context within which you can say things that make no sense outside of that context. Often, being specific involves being lengthier. If there is no way to justify being longer, then you utilize the information available in the context to enable more rapid communication. In a way, being specific wastes the available context. That being said, there are certainly cases where you do need to be specific. And if, in those cases, you are not, then you simply might not know the proper word.

Kidding aside, I don't think everyone can or should use proper names for just about everything, much so for the average individual. It's usually in a conversation between geeks/enthusiasts of a certain hobby or interest that proper names are appropriately used, like in a conversation between Gundam fans, you'll always hear people saying their proper names and the Grade that they are made in.
