I honestly loved the anime. Its not the anime that got me into anime and manga, but its the anime series that made me stay. When I show it to my friends who aren't into anime, it didn't turn them into otakus, but it made them realize how much fun anime can be. When I showed it to my anime loving friends who never heard of the series, they end up loving it too and they become fans of the manga.

Now, if you are going to rate it by the authenticity of the manga, then yes it may prove to be disappointing. But as a stand alone anime as itself, I think its a pretty great anime on its own right. I seriously don't see why some people badmouth it to the point it sounds like it is horrible, and complete garbage. There are certainly worse anime out there and even on its low points I never thought of it as bad.

Watching the anime first pretty much enhanced the experience in reading the manga for me when I read extra bits that they left out. Its like a second playthrough of a game you love with all the goods and easter eggs at the beginning of the game instead of at the end.

But thats me, your experience may differ.

Read the manga, it's been running longer than the anime. So far, nobody wants to make a reboot of this series.

I liked the anime enough. Watch anime then go to manga.

It's basically like what happened to the first FMA series. The manga wasn't over and the anime caught up so they had to go and do their own thing. Still enjoyable to watch.

It's a good anime, although it does kind of end on a cliff hanger.
Typically manga's are better than the anime adaptations, but I would just try both.

I liked D.Grayman (but I read the manga only) and I couldn't get into Blue Exorcist...I saw like 2 episodes and dropped it. The best thing is to try it out and see for yourself if it is good or not.

^ agreed i dropped the anime after episode 2, i really found the theme of the anime annoying, IDK why, but i hated the fact we had crazy exorcists, churches with weapons, etc...
