That's actually what I do. I bought a Roku to watch CR, and subbed to CR to watch it on my Roku. That's pretty much all I use my Roku for, and that's pretty much all I do with CR.

There's a reason why I'm so pissed off.

Wow had no idea how pissed people were. I for one have not had a major problem with the UI, it just took like 5 minutes of exploring and relearning. It looks fantastic on my tv. I wasn't happy with my queue not updating to the next episode but appreciated this post seeing that someone was paying attention, especially for people having a harder time with it.

Thankyou for restoring my faith in end-users. ;-)

Granted, I think these missing features should have been there before the app went live. As people wouldn't've minded as much if ti was feature complete. Now, some people (who would otherwise have been mostly satisfied) won't take anything other than the old app back.
But that's more a fault with the user than the system.

Neemo18 wrote:

Why not roll back to the old app while you take your bloody time fixing your mess?

Because, as the above poster stated, not everybody hates it. Even with the flaws, people find it usable. Their may even (shock) be some few people who actually would be annoyed if the new features (HD, resume form other device) suddenly upped and vanished.

You know why he's a master?
Because he has plausible deniability. He might not really be a Troll. However, the volume of replies he puts out blaming inflamed users, indicates to me that he is a Troll. Just a very good one.

Of course, this could be my not so hidden attempt to be a Troll. Enjoy.

Well, things are looking a *little* more hopeful. It's about damn time we got some news.

I hope the rewind and fast forward go back to how they were, because I have to rewind a lot if I was distracted from the picture by the subtitles or vice versa. I might fiddle with the new controls to see how they work; I've just been too frustrated to do so lately.

ALSO (important) will there be an option to never have your Roku play the shows in HD–even if you have to do it online like the subtitle changes?

My wifi is pretty slow, and it takes Funimation shows like 5 minutes to load an SD episode. If it works at all. CR has always been faster and more reliable when loading shows. It's already near impossible to watch your shows on my hi-tech Macbook in the lowest quality.

I'd still rather have the old app back, and I'm not re-subscribing until this one is fixed to my liking. It's pretty, but borderline useless.

I'm pretty sure we aren't getting the thumbnails back, that was calling a Roku library function for a different streaming system. While the changes in the UI were catching a lot of people's attention, the reason that some Roku's weren't streaming at all and other's were "tearing" was because of the change in the basic streaming system.

You might turn you attention to asking for it to FF/RW some predictable length of time if you just tap the button, instead of holding it down (I'm thinking maybe 20sec per tap). I don't know any details of the new streaming system, but given what the FF/RW already does, that seems like it ought to be workable.

polymathcoder wrote: I actually like the way the fast forward / rewinds works now. If you wanna skip ahead 60s, tap the button 6x. If you wanna move around on longer increments, hold it. It works well for me. @bottledwater7... I tend to use 7 taps for skipping 'most but not all' of intros at the moment. Try it.

If only ... I tap the FF on the Android Roku app and it goes 0 seconds forward. Tap it 6 times, and it goes 0 seconds forward 6 times.

Yeah, a "maximum resolution" setting so the variable bitrate streaming just doesn't keep trying speeds that just are not going to work, or else not consistently enough to be worth the trouble. It could be in the same settings as the standard starting resolution for the PC player.

I'm only in that camp sporadically ... and even when I am, if its been a couple of days on Crunchyroll alone I'd normally hit home and then come back in to refresh the queue.

That should be doable, as BBC's iPlayer does something very like that. Yes, the apps still use adaptive streaming but HD video is an on-off toggle. So if you're on a slower or metered connection, you can ensure it never uses the bandwidth-chewing quality.

I can't remember if there's a default setting, it is definitely a per-episode choice. Even that would be implementable here, probably via "More options".

Again, it's the kind of setting I would love to see across all apps. There's a hidden option for "Fixed Quality" on the iPad but I would love a "Force SD" for when I'm visiting family (who do have a bandwidth cap) and want to watch some CrunchyRoll after everyone's gone to bed, without nerfing their bandwidth for the month. :-p

Hi SailorBee,

Thank you for the update. It's good to know progress is being made, particularly for those who are having the most serious problems with unwatchable video (which I am not suffering). However, you have still not addressed the really basic problems, which are a botched app and a botched app launch. I wrote eight specific questions directed to Yanting which were blatantly ignored. Please read my post and provide answers, or tell us (for each question) why you can't. Thanks!

Here is a link to my questions: http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-862553/new-roku-update?pg=32#47561695

And here are my actual questions from that post, quoted in full:

Thanks for your questions.

To be completely honest, there are obviously a lot of questions in this quoted post (and in this thread) that I do no have the answers to at this time. I am not an engineer and I do not understand some of the context sometimes.

BUT, what I can do is try and get the answers to these questions for you! Which I will be working hard on doing today! I will relay as much information as possible to you all. Please be patient while I gather up your concerns. I will do my best!

Here is a new look at how a show will appear in the Queue!

When you access details about the show, you will be presented with the option of viewing the full episode listing,
as well as remove it directly from the queue from this page!

So here's a scenerio. I add a long anime, like Space Brothers, to my queue. It has 99 episodes, which I can't watch in one sitting. I get to episode 53, stop and come back later.

But later, I'm fuzzy on episode 52 so I want to rewatch that first. When I go to the (new) list of episodes to go back one position, does it drop me on episode 1 instead, and I have to scroll through 51 button pushes to get where I want to start, or does it drop in on episode 52, as I would hope, the place where I left off, so I only have to arrow back one show?

Dropping in at episode 1 every time and having to scroll over to where you are is what happens if you go to the current anime or search sections and view episode the lists there, so I'm hoping that behavior isn't replicated into the new functionality queue. It needs to remember where you left off watching and put you there, or at least show the episodes as "watched" somehow without having to start them one at a time to view the progress bar for each.

Hi Asharka!!

When the update is available, you will be able to enter the episode list by using the episode button from your queue and then you will be on the episode that you are currently on.

So you won't have to scroll through all episodes from episode one anymore.

If you want I can try and get more screenshots that explain and show the flow -- but know that that doesn't really... convey much I think. The engineer did hand me the remote and walked me through this process just now, so that's how I know!

Let me know if this helps!

Bee.

Hey y'all!

Gonna help tag team these questions to make sure all your inquiries are handled!

We ~are~ restoring the ability to resume an episode from the beginning!
I managed to snag a screenshot of what this will look like when you select a video you had watched prior.

We understand having the ability to rewatch prior episodes with ease is very important to you, so want to make sure this functionality is restored ASAP.

Thank you for adding autoplay. I'm looking at an older, longer series, and really the only way to play the shows one after the other is I have to look for the show in Anime, then pull up the show, then scroll left to right to find where I left off and click OK Then when it gets to the end of an episode (I get tired of listening to ending credits... sorry) I can press the Right arrow key and it will take me to the next episode.

You can't do that in Queue at all. It took trial and error to get it to do what I want, but it would be nice to get the autoplay to work (or better yet, the option to turn autoplay on and off like in Hulu)..

Thanks for recognizing that while the new interface is stylish there were some fundamental issues that needed to be addressed.

Hi luduchovny!

We are absolutely working on getting auto play in the next update!

I will also definitely forward the suggesting to turn it on and off to engineering!
That's a very good idea, and something I think would fit well in the application.

Thanks!

Bee.

Howdy howdy!

Part of the update to the queue, is making sure that the listed episode WILL update once you finish the episode you are currently on. So no fears, this is part of the first update which will be rolling out soon.

I'm also making sure to pass along your feedback about how the fast forward function works.

Let me see if I can get an update on the timeline here, but I know we're working to get it out as fast as possible.

Also, I'm going to drop you a private message about the other concern!

Ah, but that's not really an added feature request... it's a request to restore a feature that was there before in the old app's queue that was also lost in the rewrite. It's another one of the reasons the queue was so useful before.

Haha, true, that was a part of the old CR Roku app UI. However, it would be an "added feature" for this new UI.

I hope they can make these features selectable. I dislike the auto play feature, I usually switch series between episodes, and was kind of glad the update did not have that. If there is a way to turn features on/off like on the website player that would be best. Though I recall them saying it would be more of a headache to implement.

Hi sonic720 ~ !

I will be passing on the request for the ability to turn the auto play feature on and off! I actually have a similar style of watching the series I am keeping up with, so I definitely feel you on this one.

Thanks ~

Heya!

So, I've just spoken with the engineer about this.

The queue will not refresh automatically if you just leave it on the queue page.
HOWEVER
Every meaningful action done within the app, will update the queue.
So if you went from the show with a 'Coming Soon' button to the episode list & then back it would be updated.

He said that this would be a great feature to implement and also mentioned possibly adding in a 'Refresh' button straight from the queue.

As far as the update, we're working to have it out ASAP.

Unfortunately we are unable to, nor do we have plans to revert to the prior build of the app.

Best,
-B
