So the author of the light novels has basically given us license to do whatever with this world and said that if he enjoys a fanfiction he might actually make it canon. Given this, I feel like it's sort of necessary to rein in some of the creativity when we extrapolate and channel it together into some ideas. If this thread works and we come to a consensus on anything, I'll put it up here in the original post.

Note that this thread is for people looking to write fanfiction based on original characters, not those writing about already-established ones from the novels/anime.

I don't remember the author ever saying this. Unless I could recall from what he said on 4chan awhile ago, I don't remember when he said this.

The original poster's idea was to write a series based on characters playing in the North American server. My current universe details include that:

Being a much, much larger area, if the North American server world is based upon the location like Japan's is, then even with the half-distance, the data follows as such:

Half of Japan's Landmass = 188917.5 km^2
Half of North America's Landmass = 12354500 km^2

North America is about 65.5 times larger than Japan.

With this in mind, the server would naturally have more hub cities for the increase in players, which is illustrated in this data. Granted that this data comes from at least six years before the beginning of the story but the proportion wouldn't change too much if the game is as ubiquitous as the story makes it out to be.

Japan's population as of 2012 is 127.6 million. 30,000 players were logged in and trapped during the Catastrophe, representing 0.02351% of the population.

North America's population as of 2008 is 528.7 million. If 0.02351% of the population was trapped, that would be about 124,000 people.

Now, obviously that population isn't evenly spread. Canada had about 33.5 million people as of 2008 (so about 7875 people trapped), whereas the United States had 304.09 million (so about 71491 people trapped), which has me figuring that Canada would only have one or two cities (corresponding to Montreal and Vancouver, each being a major city. It would have been Montreal and Toronto but they're relatively close to each other and Montreal had more people than Toronto as of 1998.) I would place ten hub cities in the U.S., one of which is canonically New York which is in a state of chaos.

I would make the other hub cities based on Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, Seattle, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Atlanta.

@stark700, several background details in the main story came from fanfiction and ideas from the fans that Mamare liked. A lot of D.D.D.'s background information comes from a fanfic called D.D.D. Diaries, and one of the characters actually appeared in a later episode of the first season of the anime.

Can you link to me where the author mentioned that he might make fanfiction ideas into canon though? I seriously cannot remember this.

I'm looking for it now but that wasn't completely the point of the thread, it was more to collaborate so as to sort of create an expanded universe for ourselves by extrapolating the one we've been given.

Focus less on the world building and more on the character and event building.

Forget about complicated Cities or landmarks, just make a Hero, a guild, and a Villian. Have them fight over some kinda object or land or people or shit. If you want,,create your own holidays and have stories around those.

If he reads and likes it, the author may borrow ideas. I've seen more than a few mangaka using fan input.

But its YOUR fanfiction, so write it your way!

I would personally go for a MadMax styled theme. Post Apoc has people rallying behind a masculine and militant elitist player who wants to both save yet control the city's, while a less stalwart yet vocal rogue challenges his rule through his words and actions. Less fighting and more escaping militant players and NPCs.. Delicious.
