^Title, but basically I was wondering, because I am from denmark and we pretty much only have two racial groups in this country, middle-eastern and caucasian people...

So I was standing around this black girlfriend of mine (don't get heated, only including the color of her skin for the sake of the topic) and we saw some of her friends, and for some reason I recognised one of them and didn't want to call him out on the color of his skin because I felt it would be awkward, but she then proceeded to say "oh you mean the black one" and laughed her ass off at me.

Thinking of that "experience" it made me wonder... How do you go about describing someone by their ethnicity/race/color of their skin? Maybe I'm just so used to be around middle-eastern and caucasian people that it's hard for me to describe someone in that way because it's so damn taboo.

Especially when standing around people who doesn't share your racial traits, it's hard to describe others of different racial traits because you don't know how touchy they feel around the subject.

Because of that, I personally always try to describe people by anything, but the color of their skin.
How about you?
Do you describe people similarily or do you just flat out call them out on the color of their skin?

I realise most people using this site are american so it may be an ancient topic for you guys, but being in such a racially bland country as my own, it's still pretty fresh, so bear with me...

Because i'm in school, i base mine off of how intelligent they are as I tend to 'monitor' other people's tests and exams.

Their clothes or height.

If it's not racially insensitive, yeah. I think people have common sense to know when to call someone properly or by their race. I will sometimes say "Oh you mean that Spanish guy" or "Yeah, she's the Korean girl" or something along those lines, but I'm not racially pigeonholing them as just that.

My pet peeve is when someone refers to an Asian as Chinese. Usually Ghetto people.

This. I often make the mistake of describing people by their weight, though.

I don't really look at it as insensitive or mind if someone were to, its all about circumstances of the situation.

@Peripheral : Define 'ghetto' in this sense.

I describe people by their features: glasses, beard, teeth, and so on.

That's why I just say Asian.

Personally I don't think it's offensive to point out one somebody's most distinguishing features, unless it's being used in an offensive way.

I just describe by physical properties, clothing, and location. Which ever stands out most in context and/or is the most relevant is what I start with.

We ought to refer to people by their continent of origin in my opinion. I'd hate to be born in Antarctica though.

Plus there is only one race, the human race.
