[rant] If you look closely at teams in Naruto, but especially the Konoha 11, you will see that most of the teams are pretty broken. Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji are trackers and range fighters with little aptitude for taijutsu, elemental ninjutsu, or anything else outside of their special abilities. Neji, Lee, and Tenten are all combat experts, who don't seem to have any range or specialty outside of specialized taijutsu(neji, lee) and bukujutsu(tenten). Hinata, Shino, and Kiba are just terrible IMHO. Hinata is a weaker version of Neji, KIba's usefulness is situation dependent, and Im not sure about shino. Granted I like all the characters, and love the show, but the teams are poorly put together. I know the in universe logic is something about pairing the strong with the weak, so they can learn from each other, but from a tactical stand point, the only team that is put together right is team 7, and that's only because they learned from the most powerful characters in the show's universe. Furthermore, its not even until late into part 2 is this made obvious[/rant]

Thoughts, opinions?

Each team has a specialty, what's wrong with that? What team you send out would depend on what you need done.

I thought it was quite obvious that that part was bullshit. The third hokage didn't care who was strong and who was not. Ino Shikamaru and Chouji are together because of their parents, Sasuke Naruto and Sakura are split images of jiraiya and his group kakashi and his group, all the trackers are with each other, all the taijutsu users are with each other, etc. There were a lot of inconsistencies back then(like Naruto failing the graduation test three times yet being the same age as Sakura and the others) so maybe it was supposed to be about the strong and the weak but changed.

But I do agree, they're pretty lopsided. Which would be fine if that was only their genin group and they moved on. You know, learn with people who are similar to you and then when you're an actual ninja and are doing missions without a jounin then it's best to have a balance with tracking, medical, taijutsu, etc. But from what I've seen, they keep their original groups. Does Kurenai's group really need someone who can track using bugs, someone who can smell people from far away, and someone who can see someone from far away? I don't think so. Too many people for one use.

What's wrong is if you send Team guy to fight a bunch of powerful jutsu users their screwed, likewise if Team 10 gets caught up in any situation outside of tracking they have huge uphill battle, Kiba, Shino, Hinata, don't inspire confidence in a fight. Hinata is a weaker Neji, and Kiba and Shino don't have anything in their arsenal that would really help them out.

My point exactly. A real team should be mixed, you need lots of different specialties. They make a big talk of expecting the unexpected and being prepared, but if wasn't for Naruto stepping in with whatever new haxxed/broken technique of his at the last moment, a lot of his classmates would have died long ago.

Why would anyone knowingly do that? It's determined ahead of time who gets what mission.

The problem with this, is that their missions, at least the ones we see on tv/ read in manga rarely go as planned. They always end up encountering some craziness. It's also inefficient to assign missions based on specialty, most of your teams should be able to handle all your missions. With this logic, the trackers would have to wait around until they were needed to find something.

Exactly. The were stories where some teams just did nothing because there wasn't anything they were suited for at the time.
