As long as you are organized and social enough, yes go ahead. After I joined my school's anime club, I met a lot of people who I never thought would watch anime or read manga. Since you'll be the leader, you'll have to know what your doing, or it'll just fall apart.

We have one at our community college. Apparently we are the 2nd largest club on campus, 2nd only to the international club. We generally watch the first episode or 2 of various animes to broaden our types of anime instead of simply watching full episodes of older shows many ppl probably have already seen. Ive added quite a few animes to my queue from watching an episode in club. We also let people practice their panels since we have a few conventions in our town. There is occasionally drama, but that will happen with any large club.

I wasn't around when my university's anime society was formed as that was 9-10 years or so ago. But I am currently on the committee as Head of Countermeasures and Disciplanary Committee Chair so I think that if you can get enough people you should go for it.

I suggest giving it a shot, since I greatly enjoyed belonging to one at university (... way, way back in the day), but ... understand from the beginning that you are likely to get at least a few mouth-breathers in the mix. Tolerate 'em as best you can.

But institute a "No B.O." or "Shower regularly" rule. You will thank me later.

I'm mulling over starting an anime/manga club at my uni. Maybe. I'm social enough where I could find ample people to do it, just wondering if any of you have any previous experience doing this and how it worked out. . .

I know anime has become pretty popular, and to be honest I don't wanna draw people who are just there to be "nerdy" or some chic Instagram hogwash. Like please actually like anime and manga, not some cultural label you've implanted on yourself. And no "Kawaii desu!" would be allowed. Ever.

Testimonies welcome.

That picture made me laugh so much ! xD

I an the secretary of my school's anime and manga club
It's fun in the club we often do debates on certain animes like SAO vs. AOT or is so and so dead. We play video games sometimes like bringing SSB or a bunch of people bring Nintendo 3DS' to play Mario Kart. We watch anime obviously. The peeps are awesome and weird which is cool because we otakus are weird and awesome people.

Back in my day when I was in college, we had a "Sci Fi/Anime Club" of which I became a member. They required dues for members and, the dues paid for them purchasing new anime, manga, and sci fi. They had a rental program which your membership dues allowed for you to borrow as much as you wanted! It was kind of awesome.

That said - go for it. First, though, I'd find others to help you. Doing something like this on your own may be incredibly taxing. Being able to spread out the work of planning, organizing, scheduling, etc with at least one other person will make it a more pleasant experience.

I joined an anime club once...

I left so fast

It was the most unpleasant experience, people where so awkward and loud, worse part is that they didn't even watch that much anime, pfff.

Heh...I had the same kind of experience.

I joined too but left early. The club did not have any mangas to read. I was expecting to read some old ones. But nope.

You could tell the desperate waves in the air. Guys hoping at least one girl join their club.

I am starting one at my school. First I have to get the club accepted. The lady i've signed up to discuss this with has 2 pages of people to go through first so my patience will be running low.

Also, I really hope no autistic people join. I seriously cannot deal with those people. ugh.

Anyway, I was considering having days where we can watch anime movies after school in the library- but I's not sure if they'd let me play Corpse Party on there. Lol
