I have heard that fan made subs are in a league of their own, and that CR's subtitles are generally worse than the fan subs. I don't know if this is true or not, but if I go off and enjoy some other peoples subtitles enough to realize what i'm missing out, that would detract from my value perception CR, the site where I view most of my anime. What should I do, does anyone have a related story?

The most popular "Sub group" rips theirs directly from CR/Daisuki/Funi etc.

Sure, CR's not perfect, but none are.

i couldn't help but laugh at your post.

No it wont.

Crunchyroll has pretty good subtitles.

There are alot of shitty fansub groups, however the kingpins *name excluded* and *name excluded* are pretty great.

The best sub group imo *name excluded* gets alot of their material from both CR and Funi and i use them for shows that are not licensed in my region.

There really isn't a big difference between groups who actually have quality translations, the only difference may be the translation of particular phrases.

for example, Onii-chan being translated to Big brother, or not being translated at all.

Or titles of characters being translated.. (when they really shouldn't since its a title)

i dunno about fan subs, but fan scanation group i have some experiancd with.

i got a hold of japanese manga of is this girl for real. i started translating it trying to learn japanese. the scanalation group had closer, more literal translation than the offical CR manga.

things like turning a question into a statement.

you have to realized, CR subs are done for profit, fan subs are done out of a passion.

tho unless you trying to learn japanese i would not worry about it.

nisikeo on CR had idiot translated as damn instead once. the same feeling, but not quite accurate.

Personally I don't mind. Sure some fan subs may be better, but I would rather watch it officially here. The subs are not so bad you can't understand what is happening. I just wanna support the industry, so if that means having these subs then fine.

At the end of the day as long as it makes sense what does it matter?

Misleading thread title.

CR is pretty spot on with subs if you ask me. Japanese is a really hard language to translate to English a lot.

It gets on my nerves when they subtitle in the 3rd person.

2 people would be talking to each other, and they say the name of the person they're talking to, but the subtitle refers to them in the 3rd person, it just drives me insane.

CR does quite well with their subtitles in comparison to other groups.

However, I don't exactly understand why that would matter if you lack an understanding of the language to begin with (Sorry, that's really rude of me to say.). When it comes to translating and INTERPRETING (Those are two completely different things!), every person/group has a different approach.

Most mainstream groups (the licensed ones) are going to try and make it understandable for the otherwise ignorant viewers. There are many things that do not translate well into English and vice versa, so they occasionally have to find a better interpretation of it.

Honestly, don't worry about it. You'll know when the really bad subs come up.

The fan-subs I've seen are just "meh".
CR's subs aren't too bad really, not perfect (by any means) but it works well enough.

Game subs on the other hand...
I do not know why but the official trans are really, really bad in my experience.
For games I prefer a fan-sub.

Sounds like nitpicking to me.

People worry too much about what is "better" lol.
