I am not sure, I watched AOT & Hunter x Hunter at a different subtitle source after watching the series on CR and there were a fair few different translations that bugged me from the CR version.

I came across a couple curse words etc which weren't featured in the CR subs, I assume this is to keep it child friendly but I felt they were out of place anyway, especially coming from Gon so for anime that are featured on CR I tend to stick with CR although the curse words could be intended at the time.

I would say there is nothing wrong with fan-subs though, they're definitely well done enough that you should watch a series which isn't on CR without worrying too much about the subs unless you're a die hard fan of the show you're watching and feel a wrongly translated sub or two could bother you. Though I would say it depends on who the fan-subs were done by.

So I think CR for the shows on here, fan-subs are a-okay for anything else. That's my thoughts on it at least. I may have gone a little off topic if so, my apologies.

I just know that CR subs are way better than Netflix. Not the content, but the readability. The "medium" size is a little too small, while "large" is way too big! I think CR is just right.

i'm not worried about that at all. usually with anime, I can tell what the characters are saying or going to say.

what i'm worried about is not being able to appreciate the series because I couldn't pick up on the puns in the dialogue... because these get lost in translation...

also humour that are specific to Japanese. I mean I feel like if I wasn't Asian, I wouldn't be able to understand certain humour. like when this character in love stage!! starts calling his crush's brother "brother in law" (even though they're not married)... like this type of humour wouldn't make sense to a Western person xD. because western people call other people by their first name... and not by title.

so i'm afraid I missed out on a lot of humour very specific to Japanese people. since i'm not Japanese.

Eh, how is this misleading. 'Subtitles discussion' was the thread subtext for 'I'm afraid.' You guys are funny.

'but if I go off and enjoy some other peoples subtitles enough to realize what i'm missing out, that would detract from my value perception CR, the site where I view most of my anime.' - this thread in a nutshell

edit: fan subs doesn't change the experience of an anime, to be clear. Thanks for the words.

I have heard that fan made subs are in a league of their own, and that CR's subtitles are generally worse than the fan subs. I don't know if this is true or not, but if I go off and enjoy some other peoples subtitles enough to realize what i'm missing out, that would detract from my value perception CR, the site where I view most of my anime. What should I do, does anyone have a related story?

Do like i did,
Step 1: Get (and use) rosetta stone

Step 2: Get a japanese Grammar guide

Step 3: Watch a series (unsubbed)with simple vocabulary like Chibi maruko-chan or Crayon shin-chan... or Okaasan for non anime

Step 3.5 Find a japanese Skype buddy and talk with them daily (optional)

Step 4: gradually move up until you can watch almost any show un-subbed

Estimated time ~8 months - 2 years, based on dedication, age, and ease of learning.

Step 5: never be afraid of missing out because of bad subtitles again!!!

Note: the vocabulary used in most anime is very small and most of the time very non-formal, if you ever take a trip to japan... never speak like they do in anime, using boku, atashi, ore to refer to yourself will instantly make you seem like an arrogant school kid.

Crunchyroll's subs may not be the BEST, but they're definitely good enough to understand what's happening and being said. I'd never go to any fansub site because I don't trust other anime fans.
