Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help with this problem. I was browsing reddit looking for Tokyo Ghoul artwork, and somebody said that a great place to get fan art work is danbooru. I do not trust sites that I have no info on, so I tried looking up info on Danbooru. I haven't really been able to find anything. So what is Danbooru, and more importantly, is it even a legal site?

I've been going to danbooru and even gelbooru for years. It's a great source for artwork and I've never run into any problems.

Danbooru and gelbooru are good site but both feature artwork that is mostly +18 and don't source the artwork all the time. They also sometimes have official art thrown in to.

Why does it even matter if it is legal or not?

I think they respond to DCMA requests so it is a legal gray-area haha.
I think it's one of those "we can't be responsible for everything, we try our best" kind of things, that art only gets taken down if they are requested to.

Not that this matter (potentially) but Gelbooru does not allow non-japanese artists unless you make some kind of fantastic impression, and then each piece you submit (or add for someone else) is highly scrutinized.

Thanks for the replies. I was nervous because I heard they had a lot of NSFW stuff and even some gross loli stuff which frankly, I don't want to even be on the same site as. In Fact wouldn't that cause problems for the government, seeing as they are really uptight about stuff involving lolis.

Technically they're legal, but they feature mostly NSFW and 18+ artwork.

Go to Zerochan or e-shuushuu as they are the "safer" cousins of those sites

Nah, legal gray area. So long as everybody involved, really the artist, claims that the 'loli' in question is 18 or older.....you're good to go. It's how eroge released in America legally can have lolis, by like Mangagamer or Jast. They release a disclaimer at the beginning that says....

'This is a work of fiction. All characters represented in this media are eighteen and above.'

Stuff like this, basically. This disclaimer gets you around a lot, so long as no character in the work of fiction is specifically said to be younger than 18.

Although there's a lot of +18 stuff there, some of the art is actually pretty good-
and, if I remember correctly, there are still pictures from pixiv users whose accounts were either terminated,
or just if the art itself was taken down.
Not to mention, though a lot of it is pixiv, there are also works from other, lesser known sources that end up being worth finding-
much better than zerochan and minitokyo- unless you're looking for wallpapers.

The main thing would probably be that it's easier to find works on Danbooru since searching is done by english tags,
rather than pixiv, which is still working on it.
Also, Danbooru contains work from certain artists not on pixiv (for somewhat obvious reasons),
however, sometimes those artists end up creating a lot more than just NSFW stuff.

...pretty sure it's legal for the most part,
only because others are saying so...

I use Deviantart to find most of my fanart. Legal, safe for work, artists are credited and anyone who steals someone else's artwork can be reported right on the site, and there's even a feature that lets you turn off mature content if you don't want to see it. You can't view the mature content on the site if you're not a member anyways. Awesome artists and art, and one of the best fanart sites that I've ever used.
