I was initially going to put best father or worst father for a topic, but honestly I think that would have been too short and too boring. Fathers in anime usually come in many shades of grey.

So instead I would say who do you think is the most important father character in an anime? What anime would not be the same if this father character weren't in it?

For me it would have to be Akio from Clannad.

I'd go so far as to say that you could heavily change Tomoya's character or Nagisa's character and the plot would still somehow work as long as you left Akio intact. On the other hand if you drastically changed Akio's character, I think we would have a completely different anime. The fact that he was such a goofy and supportive father / father-in-law / grandfather really made the plot move forward and let the story be more about family than simply romance.

Daikichi from Bunny Drop. Not a father exactly, but father figure. (ignoring everything that comes after the anime in the manga)

I would actually completely agree with Akio. Really I'd even go as far as saying Clannad ~AS~ was entirely about what it means to be a father. First Akio teaching him what it means to be a father, then Okazaki realizing his failure as a father, and then Okazaki coming to forgive his own dad.

Runner up has to be Goku. Anyone who's seen DBZ can recognize that hes one frickin awesome dad.

I think I'll go a different route. I nominate Yuuta Segawa of Listen to Me Girls, I Am Your Father. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listen_to_Me,_Girls._I_Am_Your_Father! Where as a college freshman he adopts the daughters of his deceased sister to keep the family from being broken up. While the over arching theme of the show is sad especially when trying to tell little Hina (3 years old) that Momma and Poppa will never be coming home there is satisfying conclusion. Yuuta has to not only go from being an absent uncle to an every day father while having to grow up himself. I liked the show enough to buy the DVDs . that is a high recommendation.

Yuuta with Sora, Miu and Hina

And Yuuta's one day mother (Raika Oda) to his being thier father. (Here she is teasing Yuuta)

Souichirou Shimogam from the Eccentric Family was rather noteworthy. I felt like he was a big part of the story even though he wasn't a main character and I definitely think the show wouldn't be the same without him. Plus It seems like you almost "get to know him" by getting to know the other main characters.

I also felt like Tatsuo Saeki from Gingitsune was a great father and a pretty good role model.

Oddly enough, I never really liked Akio. I never disliked him either, but I never liked him lol. As far as After Story goes, I personally thought Tomoya's dad was more noteworthy. The story involving him was the only real part of After Story I felt invested in, as utterly shocking as that probably sounds. But again, that was just my experience and i'm sure it's extremely odd lol

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood would be nothing without Hohenheim and Father.

Well of course The Eccentric Family wouldn't be the same without him, cause the story was all about finding the truth about his death. >_>

This is true lol.

But what I meant was that he didn't feel like he was just a plot device. He's already dead at the start of the series, so he's not even a character you regularly encounter. Despite this, by the end of the show I felt like I knew him as if he had been a regular character. In some other shows with a similar premise, like say Kill la Kill, I usually don't care all that much about these types of characters since they're not actively participating in what's going on.

So i'm always somewhat surprised when I do end up caring for these characters despite the fact that they're not really "present" in the current timeline of the show. I suppose I would list Tohru's mom from Fruits Basket for much the same reason if this thread asked about noteworthy mothers lol

But it's true that he was vital to the story, so perhaps it was redundant for me to mention how the story wouldn't be the same without him. I meant that more "emotionally" than literally (for lack of a better way of putting it). XD

Most dads are like that with their daughters. Well except for the part of tearing off the steering wheel. Lol But hey, at least he showed her that he cared, right? Nice one Vegeta

Haruhi's dad from Ouran. Because. He's a crossdressing dad. And also because it's heartbreaking to see him trying to be the mom that Haruhi never had...
