Today at school I found a poster for a manga/anime group in my school.

I would love to join them in a heart beat... Only problem being that it was for girls only. So what do you think about excluding people from groups?

I personally think that this is a sexist bull of crap and I will utilize my position in the student council to force 'em to change. Plus, excluding it to only girls means that they won't attract as many people as they would otherwise.

Wow. That's next level anime club discrimination.

I see your age, but by school do you mean High School or College? I still refer to my old college as "school" and so why I would ask. In college that kind of thing is more prevalent - being female or male only (though I never saw a male only hobby club at my campus).

Anyways, I think exclusion based off something you can't control is wrong. Not that I think "you wish you were a girl to join that group" - I just think an interest group that essentially bans students based on sex is stupid. Even if they only play Shoujo Anime and only talk about Shoujo Manga - it is ignorant to think guys can't appreciate those things (I am well known to say how I prefer most art styles in things targeted at girls xD). It would be like having a male only anime/manga club that only plays DBZ/other Shounen Jump things that bans women just because they aren't the target audience.

Yeah.... I apologize for rambling. This just kind of made me mad. I don't know how schools are funded in Sweden and didn't want to research it not knowing if you're in HS/college and private/public school, but yeah. It seems wrong ><.... You did say "group in my school" - which is why I got upset. If this were a public interest group - women's groups are not unheard of. The difference is location.

Best of luck.

personally have no problem with it.

there are schools only for girls and schools only for boys. those aren't considered sexist. they're made for a specific reason, it doesn't have to be a sexist reason.

Your logic isn't sound considering it is assumed the original post is clearly talking about a group at a school with both male and female students.

To each their own.

my analogy makes sense because a school is a small part of a community. A community harbours both male and female children.

school groups are smaller parts of a school. if that school was female only, they wouldn't need to say, females only. they would just advertise "Join our anime club"

so you're the one who didn't follow the logic.

I'm going in Sweden's biggest high school Fryshuset. If you look at the papers then it says that it's a public school, however the school isn't owned by the government nor is it funded by them. Infact, the school is funded by companies like Apple, Coop, Microsoft, entertainment companies, music companies etc.

feel free to use a diff example. I'm sure there's something in Sweden that's exclusive for females, e.g. Pregnant women groups or Women groups for outings, etc. or do bars in Sweden not have "Ladies' Nights" ?

When you ask for a diff example then the only thing that pops up in my head are feminists.

Some clubs are set - up that way. I've never approached a disabled sports game and asked to join, it`s just they set it up like that for a reason and sometimes you should respect that.

Now you can start your own for guys only. Call it "Banana Hammock Anime Panic" or something vile.

What`s the point on making it vile? To get back at "someone"?

I don't see a problem. If they could start an all girls club, couldn't you start an open club?

That is sad ;(

Having an Anime/Manga club here in Sweden is uncommen right ? I haven't heard of any and I am very sure there isn't any at my school ~

And finding out that it's for girls only ? That would break my heart </3
That is quite harsh, but think on it, maybe they want it to be all girls (but it is more fun with both genders) because of reasons.

You should not force them to change tho, first just talk to the club president 'bout it and for sure it will work out, if not then do what you think is the best (:
