Where Does Life Begin?

I am aware that there are multiple views on this topic; there are people who think that the life of a human begins at conception, others think it starts at the first heart beat, others say it begins at birth. I believe that life begins at conception. Why? Because from that moment, something starts to grow, and when anything starts growing and developing, it is on its way to forming something complex and amazing.
A lot of people use the 'life begins at birth' excuse as a reason for abortion, but I feel this is wrong. In this country, a baby can be aborted at 24 weeks. There have been cases where babies have been taken out of the womb and kept alive on life support from 22 weeks. Does this mean that it still has no life? Many of these babies have survived and grown into healthy human beings, yet they could have easily have been killed at a later stage of development.

So what are your views? Where do you think life really begins and why? (please no one-line answers)

Note: I am aware I talked quite a bit about abortion in this post. However, this is NOT an abortion thread. if you want to talk about abortion, go here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/showforumtopic?id=4605

so, if you were pregnant, you wouldn't mind someone kicking you in the stomach and making you miscarry your child then, because it's not alive? you wouldn't care?

In my eyes, life begins at conception, when the sperm and egg meet during sexual intercourse. It is at this point that the human being is created, and so it is when the human life begins.
And so, it's not as easy to define as "Oh, life begins when you're born", it's more complicated. There are many stages as to when life COULD begin. When the sperm and egg meet? When the heart starts beating? The the child is fully developed? Or is it at the actual birth of the child?

It does not matter to me at all. If someone needs my organs I do not have to give it to them. The same thing applied with abortion. I do not like abortion but would not presume to tell someone what to do with their bodies.

As Jon-Christ pointed out, "There are many stages as to when life COULD begin."

but the thread starter is asking for Where...er...thats' a place is it not? so...inside the mother..o__o; thats where it all begins

but personally I think its at a stage inside the mother, not when the baby is born, because "when" the baby is born, its a time line, the baby could have been taken out a few days *some even weeks/months* before the date that its' actually "born" on...So life was long inside the baby "before" being actually "born"

Well it's not like I would care, but it would be such a huge lost because it's just a fetus. It would also depend if even wanted a kid. A lot of facts can play into it.

Would you care to elaborate and give examples of these facts that "can play into it"?
It gives us something to discuss...

That's all well and good, but can we move back onto the topic in hand?

I agree that "life" begins at conception as the organism beings to undertake life processess. (cell division, respiration on a cellular level etc).
However. Abortion is a different topic entirely. If we consider that life beings at conception then how could abortion ever be acceptable?

In my opinion life begins with a fertilised egg and grows to become complete. I don't think there has ever been such a case where a human being didn't start off as fertilised egg. You can also say that life begins at whatever stage the mother chooses it to begin until the law comes into it.

I think life begins at conception, but when I looked at the title, I just assumed you meant like life.. life.. not actual.. eh. i don't know how to word it but I think the 'other' meaning I mean is your life starts when you start to understand, what is happening to you, why you're here and enjoying life in whatever circumstance.

I think that the question meant: When does life begin (eg, conception, when the foetus is fully developed, etc.)
