I was about to go to sleep and I see this on ANN.

"Whether it's a cartoon image or a photograph, any representation of underage people's genitals is illegal under the Criminal Code."

That sounds like a really bad law

Edit: Here's the original article http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Crime/2014/09/09/21928441.html

QUEBEC CITY -- A former private security guard at CFB Valcartier will spend 60 days in jail for watching Japanese child-porn cartoons known as hentai.

Regis Tremblay, 54, cited "curiosity" for watching the explicit cartoons in January 2012. The base is located approximately 25 km north of Quebec City.

Quebec court judge Bernard Lemieux sentenced the former Commissionaires guard on Monday at the Quebec City courthouse.

Tremblay acknowledged he watched the child pornography several times while he was running the ammunition depot at Valcartier Garrison.

Investigators recovered 210 hentai files from a hard drive, along with 501 incriminating web addresses from his browser history, the court heard.

Crown prosecutor Nathalie Leroux said most of the cartoons depicted the sex organs or anal regions of characters who looked like minors.

"Whether it's a cartoon image or a photograph, any representation of underage people's genitals is illegal under the Criminal Code," said Leroux.

Tremblay will be a registered as a sex offender for 10 years.

"Who looked like minors." I had two friends in high school who looked like they were 12 years old our senior year. If they had lovers in Canada, would that person be arrested because they are dating someone that looks like a minor. That's how the ruling sounds like to me. The man was stupid to be watching Hentai in a military. Why would you do that in the first place?

"Whether it's a cartoon image or a photograph, any representation of underage people's genitals is illegal under the Criminal Code," said Leroux. So are you telling me that even an innocent children's drawing could be considered illegal if there's a representation of underage peoples genitals? What about the photo about the naked Vietnamese girl running away from her village after it got bombed?(I saw it on the front page of MSN last year and its considered a historic photo) What about documentaries about the people that live in the Amazon Forest? A lot of naked children appear in those. The prosecutors definition of child pornography is to wide. Even the innocent picture my parents took of me taking a bath when I was three could be considered child pornography. I don't know about Canadian law, but it seems to me that they need to update it and name something specific..

Unfortunately US is about as bad. Australia had a judge announce that cartoon children still have human rights.

UK law is so broad that their Olympic game logo technically qualified as child porn.

This is so beyond dumb i am ashamed to be Canadian, in what way is an animated anything treated as real life? dumber than Quebec charter of values BS, i feel like its more of the same "we must make the world safer" crap without any real knowledge or understanding. The fact is that harming a child in any way is terrible and you should be thrown in the pits for doing so. But you can not harm a cartoon, its not real, neither is a video game, or a movie, or a comic book, its fantasy. I feel like this is similar to the whole video games are ruining are children argument.

Even if the characters in the hentai are underaged I still think it should be okay to watch it.

I mean, it's similar to people that watch rape porn and such. Even though rape is illegal, no one is getting hurt in the process of watching it (as long as it's made by a reputable company).

So while I wouldn't watch it myself, I see no reason to persecute those who do.

You have to ask yourself, if animated children have rights too then will the police next be tracking down those anime characters that shoot and kill others and arresting them for murder? I guess they could have a anime artist draw a jail cell with the perpetrators locked inside it. It would have to be a really big cell though.

While child porn is wrong in every sense of the word, I think this is going a bit far. More than likely it is political and someone was trying to look good by saying "Look we're doing something about child pornography". The guy apparently had hentai anime saved to his hard drive and had visited web sites with it, though they do not say that all that they found was related to child porn.

The common conception is if you'll watch stuff like that in the privacy of your own home then you must want the real thing as well. Reminds me when they tried to pin shootings and other bad behavior on the violence in video games. I won't even go into the whole Dungeons & Dragons BS! Sadly this guys life is over as he knew it. 10 years as a registered sex offender will stay with him far longer than that. Good luck getting a job once he gets out of jail.

Quebec: We must protect fictional people from fictional harm! Today hentai watchers, tomorrow people who fictionally slaughter millions of fictional innocents as super villains in cinema!
