Metacritics needs to die or change and here's why, Destiny launched yesterday. And for the fun of it I decided to check it out on Metacritics. And then I see people whom have given it a 10 on one platform and a 0 on the other.

You can't trust 12-15 year old's, haters and fan(boys/girls) to write reviews in a responsible way. And this is why I think it should be shut down. However there's a way to fix Metacritics, how you ask? Well it's rather simple~

One of the biggest gaming news sites (Gamespot) owns Metacritics and this means that they have close ties to game publishers and developers. So all they have to do is put a Metacritics redeem code in every game package or throw in a code whit the email you get once you've bought something off of Steam, GOG, PSN etc.

And this could even be brought over to anime since there are a LOT of anime sites that work in the same way. However, I think that anime critic websites are handling it much better since anime doesn't have the mentality of your either whit one camp or the other.

So, what's your take on this?

I don't want to buy the game before I review it.

Metacritics are biased with their opinions.
But I wouldn't go as far as to wish them death.

Then you shouldn't be reviewing it in the first place..

Not all ideas are well thought out or well-expressed, I'll admit. Where I'm lost is how restricting the marketplace of ideas by making the ability to write and distribute reviews on popular reviewing sites contingent upon a purchase is going to solve that problem.

Edit: I mean, if someone is really a fanboy/fangirl for a particular video game or anime franchise it doesn't make sense that they wouldn't also purchase the products of that franchise. You wouldn't eliminate biased reviewing from exceedingly passionate fans at all, and in fact you'd run the risk of making their opinions disproportionately loud.

I get my game reviews off of /v/. /v/ is always right. That's why I never play games because all games are bad.

I think the advanced technology in today's generation has led to less actual ingenuity and originality in the video game world, but also in movies, TV shows, etc.. This is why I don't understand people who waist hundreds of dollars buying games they know are not very good, just to give them some 'not so professional ' review.

This position doesn't make sense to me. Could you explain why it is that someone who is disinterested in purchasing a work ought not review it?

I don't trust them too much for reasons like that, but I admit I usually check metascore on games before I buy them, and then read some reviews and player opinions that have actual time played of the game. Sometimes I fall into hype and pre-order like on Wildstar that I played for 2 months ._.

I kind of agree with you. The problem is not that people want to express their opinion, because they definitely can, but there are very few honest opinions or 'reviews' in there. They just jump into the hate bandwagon and spit bs just because, without even playing a demo/beta before.

They will never shut it down, or restrict it, so my recommendation is just to ignore reviews altogether. Or check forums/reviews of people you know are giving their honest opinions.

The whole number system in ratings is fucked anyway. According to number scores now-a-days, a game is only good if it's a 9 or 10, it's OK if it's 7-8, and if it's below 7 it's not even worth playing.

People just need to stop putting so much weight behind arbitrary review scores and actually think for themselves through research whether a game might be enjoyable or not.
