I don't really want to go too far into specifics due to the new anime coming out, but Fate/Stay Night's Main Character Shirou is a pretty interesting case for a broken character. He isn't broken in truly obvious ways that make it hard to function or behave normally like some of the other characters named here, but as you progress in the story he's shattered as a human being on a basic level.

patakuYeah got a point just sometimes I wonder what could have been off the littlest things could have changed the story's path

In that regard if her childhood had turned out less harsh then it was. I feel she would of been a character something akin to Saeko Busujima from HOTD, a strong yet caring person with a hidden bloodlust (can't let her not be who is she is after all).

In terms of being broken Esdeath the perfect example of how:

1) Easily impressionable a child is at a young age.
2) How weak the human psyche really is, no matter how mentally strong a person is everyone breaks down loses control.
3) And finally how quickly somebody's mind can be changed under the right circumstances.

She's clearly one of the most interesting characters from Akame ga Kill and I'm kinda' disappointed they cut some of her important development scenes from manga.

I felt the need to comment on the semantics of the word 'broken' as used in this discussion. Personally when I hear that a person or character has been broken I immediately assume they have been tortured either physically or psychologically until they are fundamentally changed, becoming willing to say or do anything to make the suffering stop. This is not an attractive feature in a character for me, because at that point they are usually betraying their former comrades or something of the sort. I can't call to mind any anime characters who fit that narrow definition at the moment... at least not main characters, I guess Esdeths' victims fit it pretty perfectly.

I think 'flawed' would be a better word than 'broken' for most characters. I tend to think of being broken as a traumatic and somewhat sudden change in a character, while being flawed is much more flexible. In that line of thinking I would say that all interesting characters are flawed in some way, because there's nothing fun about a character who is perfect .

Either that or 'damaged.' Damaged would be more appropriate those with painful pasts that have altered their personality, but not so drastically as to be completely broken.

I think Youko from 12 Kingdoms and Shinji from NGE are good examples of flawed characters, while Sasuke from Naruto and Killua from HxH are good examples of damaged characters. Still can't think of a truly broken main character... darn.

Adding some examples to the semantics discussion here are some characters I'd call "broken".

(It's not an exhaustive list, I'm just cherry-picking.)

Berserk:

Black Rock Shooter (TV):

Fate/Zero:

Ga-Rei: Zero:

Gunslinger Girl:

Haibane Renmei:

Kara no Kyoukai:

Madoka Magica:

Mardock Scramble:

Monster:

Neon Genesis Evangelion: End of Evangelion:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann:

Texhnolyze:

The Eccentric Family:

Yumekui Merry:

And of course, everyone's favorite from Code Geass:

There we go! I knew there were a bunch, I just couldn't call any to mind. Of all the series you listed that I've watched, I agree with you.

Anime is excellent at showing that moment of 'breaking' when a character is pushed past the point of no return.

Sorry when I was thinking up this thread I was thinking broken as in like a broken toy or doll. Still functional, but something wrong. And in the case of this thread if broken like a toy/doll (see OP) they can be mended. I was not making/thinking about any torture situation in any form. Unless that was what broke the character in the first place. (I hope that makes sense?)
