Starting a forum thread by saying stuff like ''Yeah I went there. Deal with it.'' before you even get a single response...

Allow me to explain.

Starting with the most obvious, which I think everyone will agree with, and the one that started me on this line of thought:
Rin = Asuka, with arrogance turned down enough that she doesn't elicit a "must punch now" response. (Clearly, Asuka's leftover arrogance went to Gil)

I've has this thread open in a tab since yesterday when you posted the topic, about time I write my response no?

To provide background information. I don't like Rin or Shirou that much. Independently they're both fine enough, but they lack the depth the rest of the cast, such as Saber, Sakura, and Archer have. This is fine as their characters are supposed to grow as the story moves on, and they do so quite well enough.
However, Rin and Shirou are different characters depending upon your route, better or worse.

Now to the meat, Asuka Langley Soryu vs Rin Tohsaka

The differences are vast here.
Rin is a girl who, following the footsteps of her father, wants to become a powerful and respected mage. She teams up with our hero out of pity/lust/necessity(depending on your route) and is a powerful respectable mage in her own right. If I remember correctly, she is known as a bit of an ice queen in her school as she focuses all her talents towards being a mage instead of social interaction, hence the Tsundere nature. She spends her time alone and not interacting with others, which unintentionally hides her Dere side from most others.

Asuka however, is trying to impress everyone out of a need for attention. Because of wacky parental abandonment(her mom caught the crazy) Asuka is trying to be seen as an independent adult rather that the useless broken child that she is.
And so she devotes herself, to piloting rather than magecraft, as Rin does, but the reasoning is different. Asuka wants recognition, she isn't the tsundere of the school but the queen bitch. She announces her piloting duties to the entire school upon her arrival. She brags about her skills to Shinji and Rei. She intentionally asserts herself as the dominant person in all relationships.

Contrast to Rin who us passively dominant due to her knowledge and Shirous intentional lack. Asuka's character is competing with Shinji, Rin is teaching Shirou. That along brings huge differences!

Asuka's character MUST be better than others. Asuka cares so damn much about her piloting reputation that she wears her pilots head bands as part of her visual design.
She cares so much, that when she isn't then
best anymore, she commits suicide.

I left a lot of stuff out, and I'm not nearly the best at arguing for her.

But Asuka and Rin are different, and regardless of your route, they're too different to be comparable.

Honestly, I can't see the similarities between the casts of Fate/ and NGE. All I can tell from the comparisons if that you're taking two humans and saying that they're similar because they're human or that they're the same because they're both males/female. I mean some of these characters do have similar issues but only on a basic level or in name only.

Ludicrously overwrought stereotypes being almost like ludicrously overwrought stereotypes of the same thing isn't exactly shocking news ><

Yeah...can't agree here. I'd go a bit more in depth but I think Fel, Loomy, and Insomnist covered my views pretty well

Shirou? Not wanting to hurt anybody?

That's not what the Unlimited Blade Works route depicts Shirou.

Just kidding, I tried to make my post look ignorant on purpose. I bet you're still on the Fate route, and tell me, how do you think of it so far?

I'm half way through UBW, chronologically. And yeah, Fate!Shirou is more like Shinji than UBW!Shinji, but he still has that annoying hero worship. At least so far he's less sexist in UBW.

If Shirou were to replace Eva!Shinji, he'd get in the damn robot, but then he'd worry about stepping on buildings.

Okay, I'm going to be serious here. It's still a bit of a stretch to compare Shirou to Shinji. They have different motivations, as well as different ideals and beliefs. The whole purpose of Shinji's character wasn't to become a hero, which is rather unlike Shirou.
That "annoying hero worship" thing was Shirou taking on Kiritsugu's dream, the dream which Kiritsugu couldn't accomplish. From the moment Kiritsugu saved him, he has admired him deeply ever since.
Shirou isn't sexist at all, really. He's just like that for complex reasons. He saw Saber bruised and hurt during her fight with Berserker in the Fate route, thus giving him the desire to protect her. Add that with his desire to protect others. So it's rather wrong to consider him sexist.

In anime an example would be RahXephon (a blatant NGE clone) where I think Misato's character was clearly split between Haruka Shitow and Elvy Hadhiyat.

(Still 5,000 CR Points ahead of me, o sly one.)

*ponders*

I suspect a better RX / EVA example might be Reika and Quon, who are both Rei types.

Cutting snark out of it, the problem is that 'serious' anime/manga/LNs are VERY typecast and carefully polished for marketability. The editing at those publishers must be nuts.

The reason so many of these shows (really if you choose any kind of 'mood' this is true) seem so similar is because they've slimmed it down to tropes that sell well, and there's little room for deviation.

It works too, shows that break the expected character patterns do poorly, as far as I can tell.

Errmm... yeah it have more or less the point of Tropes. yet if you only judge by the first series i got bad new for you.

Most of the tropes of todas anime are taken from NGE exaple Plain as folk and Stundere and ect.

Yet I find more comparison of Fate with Pokemon.

Yeah, I won't argue that NGE didn't spawn a terrible genre.

Unsurprisingly, the notion that Mari is best girl does not change (as Rider is best Servant).
