Right now I'm doing an assignment for my coursework about media and how it affects people.

The question I'm asking you today is "does anime affect your personality?" Do you act differently now because of a certain character prerhaps? Or do you think your personality has been more defined or changed because of this form of entertainment?

(I looked for a forum like this but had no luck finding this particular question)

It can obviously affect personality, the question is how or why. What part of a specific story impacts you and why. In one of my college classes, we watched Barefoot Gen, a story about the Hiroshima bombing. I'm pretty sure it impacted everyone who walked out of the room that day, and gave them a completely different perspective on life.

Your assignment can be based on many things. For me, it's easy to say "anime has impacted my life in this, this, and this way". The only thing I have to answer then is why it has done so.

I mean, for you, does anime affect your personality? If it does, just write about that. You'd be living proof that it does. It especially does if you start watching from a very young age.

I actually remember doing a Media exam and justifying the use of the colour red for a magazine. I stole a direct quote out of Trigun atleast by the translation of red is determination. LOL. But I think Trigun was one of the biggest impacts on my personality at the time. It opened up a whole new world to me. As post above mentioned, has it affected you? Why? I think anime, or a lot of them have at least characters and certain stories that are rather like the real world and that's why we relate so much to certain anime's. Even films and games.

Space Dandy made me realize I'm an ass man. Also? I swear I will use this quote one day in real life....

'Boobies, boobies, boobies... that's all guys think about these days. Well, they're idiots. Show me a boob man and I'll show you a no-brain, no-class knuckle-dragger who knows nothing of the fairer sex. I don't get it; you can't take the measure of a good woman just by ogling her chest.'

Followed by....

'See, if you're enlightened like I am, then you know the real show is down below: the booty, baby! That's where it's at! Nothing trumps the rump, my friend. Anyone who can't see that is either blind or a fool. That's why I say enough with this mass boob hysteria. It's time to set things right. It's time to give the ass the respect it deserves!'

I don't think it affects a person's core personality/values unless one is susceptible to outside influences than anything can influence that person. I do think anime can bring a new perspective to a person though. But to answer the core questions. No, I take that back. Bugs Bunny made me aware of and appreciate the value of the pun in humour.

Yes, it can. From the beginning japanimation explored many themes that were absent in western animation. I found it also promoted tolerance of many things at the time thought to have been taboo, while maintaining a sense of light-heartedness and levity to it.Btw Ranma 1/2 originated in 1987.

It was a sweet manga/anime, and it never ceased to make me laugh. :)

As for Trigun, in particular Vash has, apart from promoting non-violence, been noted for his emotional expressiveness, being a strong male character and all,he's somewhat a rarity :)

Any type of outside influence can affect your personality. How much they're affected depends on the person though, but mostly things affect us unconsciously, so some people may not be aware of how influenced they are by something. Most of us don't realize just how much influence people have over shaping our personalities, for instance. People seem to think they their personality is their own, when really it's just what other people (parents, friends, media) had put into you over time. Your personality may be different with different people, I've seen many people wonder 'which one of me is the real one?', well, it's all of them because mostly outside influences is how we determine how to react. You have some type of personality traits that don't shift though, depending.

I'm not sure how anime has influenced me. It has helped me understand certain societal differences, I suppose, anime isn't exactly realistic, but it does draw from its the culture it is made in. It helped me better grasp cultural relativism, in a way, I suppose.

I know a guy that acts or tries to act alot like L. So, I guess it can. Funnily after spending so much time around him I started holding my phone like L does during a call when I'm not driving or on speaker. however I think that comes down to how poeple close to you affect you one of my friends imitates my way of ta;king I have a accent that make words like bad and sad difficult for me to say since english is not my first lanaguage and if I don't pay attention and I end up pronouncing it like "BaauD" instead of bad and my friend eventually started saying it the same way.

Yes, a ton of anime fans are annoying as hell - quoting characters and squealing all day.

Doesn't affect me at all.

Anime is and will always be 'entertainment'. Sure we learn a few things now and then but no need to take it so seriously than can change ones personality
