I'm pretty much in agreement with you. In many instances this is probably veiled racism. It bothers me to since I know how the average Joe reacts to this stuff. I've had far too many conversations with people who view anyone of Asian descent as alien. It's not just about culture. It's a people who look like that are weird thing. They already have a very skewed idea of Japan and other Asian countries/people without having these kinds of things perpetuating their misconceptions. What I really hate is when people try to put a weird spin on things that are really very similar to or even inspired by things people do in the west. The whole 'well they do it too' argument doesn't hold any water. It's not about tit for tat. It's about what's right.

It's not racism, at least in the area I live in, honestly its more of the standard country to country joking insult than anything else, just like how people always joke that Americans are obese and that all Frenchmen are Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys; it's more of a friendly jab than anything else.

That said, the idea that Japan has some weird cultural elements does have some merit to them, though much of this is from a values dissonance than actual issues with the culture.

Now India on the other hand still has to deal with being known as the country that burns widows alive and is considered one of the rape capitals of the world. At least Japan is held to a higher cultural standard than them in the eyes of the world.

I find it intolerant, but I wouldn't call it racism. Unless they're intentionally mixing up the races, such as referring to them as "Chinese", just to be funny.

I notice that, too, but I think it's because it's foreign or "alien" to people outside of Japan; mainly in the U.S. For example, my friends refuse to give subbed anime a chance, because it's weird to them. They judge it before they even give it a chance. They've watched dubbed OHSHC with me, still thought it was a bit weird. But they might go into culture shock just watching it subbed.

I don't think it's racist but I do think it's highly ignorant of those people that judge other cultures without knowing anything about them. But I think all cultures do this to some extent or other.

My old Spanish professor was from Spain, and he told a story from when his family visited. He said that when they saw Football they thought it was the most barbaric thing they've ever seen. Seeing how much "aggression" the players had when they tackled each made them think that people from the USA were crazy people that enjoy watch other people get hurt. And yet here in the States we think its the coolest thing since toliet paper, and it's a normal thing for us. Then again the same thing is the opposite for us when we think about Spain's tradition of the bullfighting. Most people say that I know usually think it to be a cruel display at animal killing.

Point being that people aren't open minded and they judge other cultures because they have little to no knowledge about them.

First off, let's be honest, Japan does have a shit ton of strange shit in it, it wouldn't have grown to have that stereotype if it didn't. However, it probably would help if people received a little exposure to a regular day in an average person's life over there. They'd probably leave thinking 'Oh, they're just another person I guess'. Most of the exposure people get to Japan involve weird costumes or zany adverts which, while they do exist, are misleading as content to judge an entire country. If you were to record footage of an average Japanese street, chances are you wouldn't see everyone in multicoloured jumpsuits on pogo sticks, and I feel if people so much as saw that even once they'd realise it's not a country-sized asylum for the clinically insane.

Don't be a weeaboo, most of this is positive. In fact, the weirdness is probably why we all love Japan. It's a different culture and that to us is naturally weird but to call a culture shock racism is a bit much.

What bothers me the most is when people act like all of Asia is the same country, Japan is way different than China. Oh, and I really hate when uninformed Americans treat themselves like they're better than the rest of the world, saying stuff like "When the Japanese are really sick, where do you think they go? USA." which is obviously false, they have just as good a health system as the America, and it's socialized so its cheaper too.

It mostly has to do with ignorance and study of other foreign cultures (talking mostly about the US here). I do not like American culture, nor do I favor Japanese culture. The only culture I truly give a damn about is the human culture if it even exists. Anti-Japaneseism is caused by bad stereotypes, previous wars (ask the bitchy Koreas about World War 2), and politics.

Funny, the only fat American man I know works at a shipwright, built his own house (for a second time, now), raised three kids and is just very hard-working.

If you think about it, eating that much must require some effort... not to mention a decent paycheck.

In truth, I think Americans could stand to be a little more laid-back. I've not experienced any slums or trailer parks, though, so to me it just seems like everyone is hard-working and stressed about employment.

It is probably just you. Most Japanese people don't even watch anime.

For the record, this is incorrect. Many Japanese people watch anime as it fills many prime time slots on many channels in Japan. Anime has gained immense popularity in Japan. It may be that some of them don't watch it, or even that most don't watch huge amounts of it, but pretty much everyone in Japan has seen at least some anime, the same way I can say that I don't watch sitcoms, but I've seen a few.
