This is such a problematic thing but ok... I'd say anime is a type of Japanese animation that appears in a certain style that covers a huge range of genres and target demographics.

Off-topic: Do Koreans and the Chinese make their own version of anime? Because I know manhua or however you spell it exists.

I don't know some people defined anime as just animation but america has many animated films and shows and none i would call anime... so i would say its an art style used in cartoons around japan and in that area of the world. They can be very nice and peaceful to extremely disturbing.

Anime: a drawing style that originated in Japan. Many other countries have started drawing in this style, and yes, they COUNT AS ANIME.

But it doesn't. It's similar to how every movie made on this planet isn't classified as a Hollywood film just because it's 'filmed in the same style' (Using Cameras, human actors etc).

You can't slap on a body kit on a rusted out honda and call it a ferrari because you made it look like one.

Nope, it's the "Engrish" abbreviation.

If you believe that is nitpicking, you may want to look up the definition of "define".

The traditional definition of anime is animation produced in Japan, but with today's internationalization of products, that definition is outmoded. A more modern definition would be animation whose production is initiated in Japan, and whose primary intended audience is Japan.

Best explanation for the definition of Anime I've heard in a while.

Wikipedia says The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese, where this term references all animation. It leads me to believe it is an English jargon taken from the Japanese word.

Shorthand for the word 'Japanimation' the original term for animated tv shows imported to the US from Japan.
Any animated feature that comes out of Japan could be called 'anime'.
