I actually dont see what the problem with it is. I live in a third world country where the internet is über bad. I do pay for a full access crunchyroll account but with the internet here you cant really stream anything. So I download horriblesubs to watch the anime at 1080p. I am now doing the same with the manga. I still pay for it but in order to consume it I need to download. The way I see it, crunchyroll is losing absolutely nothing in the process since they do not lose any money by me pirating their stuff since they still get my subscription money. In fact they are saving money by not needing to provide me with the bandwidth needed to stream it.

CR may be getting your money, but with the way profits are shared with content owners, the people who created the anime and manga you are enjoying don't see any of that money.

That part matters more outside of the consumer though.
Though in truth it's not so much about how the profits are shared, but the costs involved (liscensing, translations, media storage, etc...) so there isn't as much left profit wise as most people would think.

First of all I am not affiliated with CrunchyRoll in any way other than being a subscriber like the rest of you.

But I am an old time iOS developer and I think the problem with their Manga app is not a simple one.

Why do I think that? Because the app actually runs fine on my iPhone 4s under iOS 8. I can read all the Manga from CrunchRoll I pay for on its tiny screen.

But on my iPad Air under iOS 8, it crashes every time. So it's not the underlying app code which is faulty, but something about the hardware differences between an iPhone and an iPad. Perhaps screen resolution and resizing off the scans. These can be tricky issues.

CrunchyRoll should extend subscribers' access by the time that the app has ceased to work. If it looks like it's going to take much longer they should release an app which just loads jpegs of the scans onto the screen using HTML technology. They could mock something up like that in no time.

Then they could release their Manga 3.0 app in a couple months. That's what caring for the customer looks like.

Are you listening CrunchyRoll?

Exactly lbfs.

Nobody really would mind if they did something simple like you said as an "intermediary fix" while they work on the more permanent one.
Even a rough time-frame notice would be welcome (so some of us can decide to downgrade or suspend our accounts temp or not.

I'm not really sure if you can blame it on the hardware differences since the app worked on all the devices prior to ios8. This leads me to conclude that apple has simply changed the way a function of two in the API works. It should be an easy fix. I do not believe that with the limited amount of ios devices in the wild changes in their hardware should cause something like this to just break. ios is closed source and completely controlled by apple and developers simply need to use the api. They should not be able to directly get access to hardware due to security reasons. On to the point of the apps working on older devices. I believe this would be because they lack a certain piece of hardware that the newer devices have, or the older hardware that they do use did not get their functions updated in the API. This would allow them to run the app without the problems the newer devices have. This is just my opinion on the matter. However we know absolutely nothing about what is going on with the app because crunchyroll is being uncooperative and not letting us know.

I've a long time ios developer too and it's fairly common to have issues like this. My guess is this is not an issue with an API change, but just some existing bug that happens to cause an exception on iPads running the new OS. for whatever reason, sometimes bugs exist but they dont cause any serious problems until the run under a different environment.

These types of issues are typically easy to fix, however, if the code base is a complete mess then it could be hard to fix even the smallest issues. I've seen other devs struggle with things like this, where every time they fix an issue, 2 more issues appear.

also, there is not a ton of money in comic apps so they could have contracted out some solo guy to do the app for them and maybe that guy is MIA. I have run into that a bunch of times where a contractor gets too overwhelmed in their projects and drops off the face of the earth. Moving the app to a new develop isn't quite simple because if it's poorly written, then a new person needs to either do a complete rewrite which takes time, or they need to figure out how all the bad code works in order to not introduce new bugs with every minor change.

That said, even though I can see how something like this can happen, it's not an excuse. Crunchyroll needs to fix this ASAP. It's coming on 3 weeks already.

The one thing I do hope for is that they are not trying to work on a 3.0 app and holding this bug fix until that is complete. That could take forever, a problem where you have all iPads crashing on startup is the type of bug where you drop everything, fix the app with the old code version and get an expedited approval from Apple.

Exactly, davecazz. It's more than likely they hired some one in South Korea or China to do Manga 2.0, and now find they are no longer Ina apposition to support their product. I've seeen companies go this lowball route time after time.

Most of the time however it is not for a product like this, I.e., providing a good directly to the customer.

With so many manga scan sites out there, why should anyone pay for CrunchyRoll's product when they can't deliver the goods? Yes, yes, intellectual property and all that ... So then just buy the physical manga when it comes out ...

CrunchyRoll seems to have crapped out on their manga product ....

Yeah, that's what I'm worried that they might actually be trying.
It would in a sense explain their silence to a point.....at least for the first week (but not after that).

I'm also thinking as well that someone went missing or refused to continue with the one available.

Got news for you, it happens all the time with developers in the US and Europe as well. there are bad developers everywhere.

Hopefully Crunchyroll figures it out, their video app is great. if I was them I would divert their best guy from the video app to help get this manga app under control. As far as I know Crunchyroll is only the second meaningful subscription manga server (although I'm counting the Viz Shonen Jump subscription as the first). They really need to prove to the industry that this kind of service can work. then we can hopefully get a larger variety of manga.

Woohoo! Somehow it started working on my iPad! I don't think there was any update, but it's working fine now, when it wouldn't even open earlier today ... Anyone else have the same luck?

But I'm getting ads on it. I pay for the premium all access. I should be getting these crummy slots ads!

Try logging out then logging back in. Had a similar issue on my 5S.
The update was released earlier today it seems. v2.1.1
May sound cruel but I'm seriously getting an annoyed laugh over their description for the update "Updates for iOS8"
Kinda makes it sound like a small issue instead of the program crashing for 3 weeks.

Looks to work so far.
I hope something like this doesn't happen again......I mean it was unacceptable for 3/4 of a monthly sub. Hopefully they'll take this as a lesson to be more careful (though I'm doubting it).
But at least it's finally working.

yea I can confirm it's working here.

although, if you want to see a neat bug. make sure the app is closed from the background. then open the app when the ipad is in landscape mode.
