So that 10 point system...its all kinds of messed up now that I think about it (no I'm not drunk, but yes, this is somewhat sleep deprived Rito2Ru talking).

Schools really have changed the way we look at scores.
A 9 out of 10? That's still an A.
A 6 out of 10? That's a D.
A 5 out of 10? That's a failing grade.
Anything below? You even trying bro?

Going back to anime, we got sites like MyAnimeList that use the 10 point scale to rate anime. They also use various words to describe each point on that scale but you gotta believe that most people don't follow that. A 10 out of 10 is amaze balls. A 9 out of 10 is almost there. An 8 out of 10 is still pretty good. A 7 out of 10 is ok, kind of average. A 6 out of 10 is poor show ol' chap. Anything below that is garbage tier (apparently).

I'll admit, the grading scales I've grown up with has most definitely influenced how I've rated things that use a 10 point or 100 point scale.

So where do we go from here? Do you fix it? Most people will say, don't. There's no point. Why bother? Rito2Ru why do you have your panties in a bunch over stupid review scores?
To which I'll respond, dude, 1) I'm not wearing panties...I'm not wearing anything at all right now (joke...or am I?). 2) Yeah, this is probably just a pet peeve of mine when I actually think too much about it. I mean just today, I've thrown a couple of scores at shows that have just finished.
And only now, hours later have I looked at them again and they just didn't seem right to me.

Like what really separates a 6 from a 7 from an 8? What about a 1 from a 2? Do people even use 2s?

I recall AnimeKami bringing this up a while back too and I remember thinking about it then but not really sure one way or the other.
I think having too many scoring options actually makes things worse. Maybe just a 5 star scale would be better. And by 5 star I mean you can't set it as 4.5 or something. Like 1 is really bad, 2 is poor, 3 is average, 4 is good, 5 is amazing. Of course this won't stop people from just using only 1s and 5s in their reviews but its something.
You give people too many options and its a bad thing. Give too little and its not saying enough about the matter.

I don't know whatever, I'm tired.

Have some Nibutani and Dekomori

Ratings are subjective. By it's very nature it is horrendously biased and un-standardized. Consider the 1-10 scale a representation of how much the reviewer personally enjoyed it rather than how good it is in terms of animation, music, storyline etc.

I'd rate SAO and 9/10 for me personally but the storyline is freaking stupid and I could drive a super-massive black hole through all the plot holes.. I just enjoyed it a lot.

To that end, I have already created my own rating scale here, in the spirit of RT, if not the actual execution: /group/Rotten_Sushi

Plus I greatly expanded tags, and added other (hopefully) useful goodies.

Most people who do reviews and have to give a rating will probably tell you how inherently flawed it is. I remember Adam Sessler talking about this when reviewing video games for G4 and then Rev3 (probably in one of his Sessler's Soapboxes). But despite how flawed of a system it is, it's still something people usually want.

I tried to use a 1-5 scale on Hummingbird awhile ago, but it didn't give me enough variety.

I've been slowly pulling my scores down though:

The average is like a little bit over a 5.4 right now.

The 1s and 3s and 5s are generally the kind of stuff that doesn't make it past the pitch room. I hear a lot of talk about how the 1-10 rating system is really a 6-9 rating system, but I counter with this: Would you watch something that you'd end up giving a 4? Going by the school marks parallel, that'd be a failing grade. Failure, in terms of entertainment, usually means that the piece doesn't show enough promise to be completed in the first place. It gets weeded out for a better premise to take its place.

Take a look at a less strict medium (webcomics are a good example, as people can just up and put them on the web if they want to, without having to meet someone else's approval). There are plenty of pieces in these types of art forms that are just plain not good. But looking at reviews and the like, you'll find that even then, most reviewed pieces receive something between a 6 and a 9. Why is that? Because if something is only worth a 3 or 4, chances are that you'll know quickly, and you won't stick around long enough to be able to legitimately review it.

The 1-5 territory is for things that, due to their low quality, fail to catch our interest in the first place. Less than 50% means there's more bad than good, and why would you spend your time on something like that? If something fails as entertainment, then it's not entertaining. Ratings of 1-5, though extremely rare in actual reviews, are important theoretical territory. A 6 isn't very good by any means, but the fact that it's more than 5 tells us that it has is redeemable qualities, and that there is probably an audience for it, even if the reviewer him/herself was not impressed.

10 plays the same sort of role. We consider 10/10 to mean "perfect", and because of that, reviewers (genuine reviewers, I mean) will be very strict when it comes to handing out 10s. A 9 is still really good, but has room for improvement, whereas a 10 is flawless. As far as entertainment has come, audience expectations have followed it, and as a species of critical thinkers, we can usually find something that we'd change about any given thing. A 10 represents a piece that has wowed its viewer so much that they wouldn't dare make any changes to it. Like 1-5, it's not usually a part of our actual rating spectrum, but its presence helps to put the numbers that we do use often into context.

There was a time where I would look around on MAL or reviews on youtube, but then I realized these people don't have the same tastes as me. So I just stopped reading review and whatnot making my own opinion about the stuff I watch. Nowadays I just judge anime whether I enjoyed them or not. That makes my life a lot easier.

I give 5/5 or 10/10 if something is good without any major flaws and then extra points if its something special.

I watched like 50+ old trashy OVAs/movies this year, so it let me populate my 2-4s.
