Shoujo has a possibility of yuri.

So shoujo.

I couldn't post a better answer if I tried.

I tend to dislike romance, particularly love polygons of all shapes, and like fighting. If I want a show to just enjoy and turn the brain off, I'll find a fighting shonen where they're just beating the snot out of each other. So if I have to choose between a randomly choosen show pulled blind out of a hat, I'll go for shounen. Though shounens have annoying love polygons as well, sadly. If there's romance, I prefer it to be a set couple that doesn't change (e.g., Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho).
There are more shounen than shoujo on the list of anime/manga I like, but I still like some shoujo.

I tend to like seinen. You can find stories with political intrigue, intelligent adult characters, and a minimum of teen angst. There are also shounens that have that combination, though the protagonists tend to be younger.
I am forever not the intended audience of what I read/watch. And even when I am, I like it for a different reason than others express.

I prefer seinen and josei.

Shoujo and shounen are on the same level for me but I seem to enjoy more shounen stuff because some shoujo can be utterly annoying...

Shonen.
Actual world of anime and manga was spread out by shoen, then chances for shoujo series came later on.

So I ask, what are your thoughts on shows with features like this? Do you have any more shows like them to share?

Any recommendations or thoughts of any depth would be greatly appreciated as I am particularly intrigued by this rare genre of anime, more so than any other and would like to both trace its roots and pursue its development.

Most importantly, you seem mistaken. Men and Women have different sexual Organs, out side of this and a little social conditioning, they are completely alike in all ways possible. Both are human, go watch Blue Gender or Evangelion to see different creatures.

Unfortunately for us, mist writers don't know this. Apparently the creators of Kill la Kill were having trouble writing the two female leads, so they rewrote them as men and then drew them as female later on. While its stupid how they got to that result, the fact that they went the extra mile to do this speaks volumes about society and says way more than any internal feminist message would.

More to the point of what I assume will be a long long message, and it is 8:57 at night for me right now, shows that are shoehorned into a single category are limited in what they can accomplish or appeal to. So in the end, many many shows blend the two very well.

Among the most famous, "The Visions of Escaflowne"Eacaflowne stars a young highschool girl who is accidejtly teleported into a mysterious fantasy world filled with hot guys and hawt elves and fine ass princes, where she meets a shounen protagonist, a young warrior prince out to save his kingdom. And something about a Robot... Its a huge blend of genres and its two leads are equally important, so go watch it for some fine ass watching.

High School girl surrounded by Hot guys wielding swords who pilot giant Mecha.

Depending on the series, Shojo tends to get a little too melodramatic for me at times. I appreciate it a lot, but usually in fairly small doses. I can only handle one series like Blue Spring Ride a season probably, even though I absolutely love it.

I'm also a British 18 year old, and I also find that with anime I'm able to enjoy all manner of shows despite the initial demographic the creators may have in their mind. For example, I thought Noragami was one of the best shows of the season despite being a guy. I like sappy romance, action that feels like you're chugging barrels of adrenaline on the edge of a skyscraper, cutesy stuff, thought provoking psychological thriller shows, shows that are different, shows that solidly pull of commonly used tropes.

From Space Dandy to Zankyou no Terror, and Hanamaru Youchien to Kill la Kill or Garden of Sinners, Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii and Akame Ga Kill, Yumeiro Patissiere and Yakitate Japan to Sakura Kiss or Chrono Crusade. Wolf's Rain, Psycho Pass, Ghost in The Shell, Squid Girl, Code Geass, Working!, Gurren Lagann, Death Note, Full Metal Panic, Desert Punk, Clannad, Toradora, HAL, Elfen Lied, Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, GJ Bu, Higurashi, Monster, Strawberry Eggs, Strawberry Panic, Ichigo 100% if you want carry on with the strawberrys... Cowboy Bebop, Infinite Stratos, Barakamon! I could go on till I'm blue in the face and still have 300 more to go.

I've reached the point where I can look at a top 100 anime list and have watched or at least know of all of them, and there'll be all manner of genres encapsulated within. Anime is one of those things which I've found will have me interested so long as a show is executed well, and that the genre is irrelevant. I'd never have tried romances before anime, and now I love them.
No matter who you are, or what the genre is, a good show is a good show.
