Who doesn't like seeing a good love story? Everyone likes the usual boy/girl pairing but you won't get that in the anime Love Stage!!. Why you ask? Well because Love Stage!! is a boys' love story--two attractive boys and how they deal with their feelings towards each other. Having never seeing any BL or yaoi type shows, I wasn't sure what to expect. What caused these two boys to be drawn to one another is what brought on my curiosity for the show. Is it based on a hidden orientation they didn't realize they had until they met the character? I wanted to know the answers and so my experience with this boys' love saga began.

Finally getting to watch through the first episode, I see what Love Stage!! will be offering during this 10 episode series. 10 years prior to the story, a commercial was made featuring the parents of Sena Izumi featuring a wedding. A situation occurs and Izumi was asked to fill in as a character--not just any character; a flower girl. Playing the part of the ring bearer was Ryoma Ichijou. A minor mess up on Izumi's part happens freaking him out, but Ichijou is able to calm him down and the commercial was able to be completed without any further incidents. We're now at the beginning of our story where they make a follow-up commercial in which the flower girl and ring bearer are now the ones getting married, bringing us to the reunion of Izumi and Ichijou. Ichijou is now a popular actor, and we find out that after all this time he has had feelings for Izumi. The thing is, because they met when Izumi was playing a flower girl, Ichijou thought Izumi was a girl this whole time. Izumi on the other hand didn't become an actor at all. In fact, he's the only one in his family that isn't famous (he also has an older brother who is the lead vocals in a rock band). He's a college otaku trying to be a manga artist, and doesn't have any interest in show business, but of course gets dragged into doing the commercial anyway.

From here, you can see what's going to happen with these two in the story--how it was dealt with is something else entirely. Ichijou's initial reaction after finding out the truth was expected but his feelings from over 10 years didn't go away so easily. Izumi just wants to go back to his otaku life. The feelings these two have were definitely not mutual. Through their own struggles they do eventually find something more in each other. There were scenes that were awkward to watch during this period of discovering feelings from Ichijou's end. A couple times he brought himself onto Izumi that would make the viewers think differently of what was really happening. This in no way takes away from the series. In fact, there is a good balance of humor in there from the main, and other, characters that goes well with the drama side. It's just a shame that this series is only 10 episodes long. Everything felt so rushed, especially towards the end. I would have loved for things to developed at a slower pace and I'm sure it does in its manga counterpart. That's not to say I didn't enjoy what I saw. This is one of the shows I loved watching during the summer season. Whether you like BL or not, if you like a good romance story Crunchyroll has a good one right here with Love Stage!! With its short series length, it makes for a good show to marathon. Check it out when you can!

I actually didn't find it rushed, but that was probably because it pretty much followed the manga to a T.
