For something that is going to be so in your face it is going to need a higher resolution. 1080p is too pixelated for being so close to the eye even with 16x AA. Manufacturing processes need to become cheaper for 4k displays to really make this thing great.

Thinking ahead I know of some prerequisite technologies for nervous interfacing that is currently in development by various groups (including DARPA- mostly for prosthetic purposes) that look promising and that is just what has been declassified... I believe a true VR experience may actually be quite possible but I'm not sure I would trust our dysfunctional FCC to ensure the safety of such things. New technologies sometimes require new regulatory bodies.

It all has to start somewhere and I want Oculus and others to succeed in a big way because there is no greater motivation for those with the resources to make it happen than money. If the HMDs can find a solid market development will speed up.

Actually from what I've heard the final product will be 4k.

I foresee it being used for great things, but I really think they need to set up some demos of the kit in certain stores like they do with consoles. I don't want to have to go to a games conference in another country just to try it out. Overall I hope it's the next big step. After the jump from 2D to 3D in gaming we haven't really had anything that big happen, and I think this could potentially be the thing we need. I fear for how successful it will be, whether it be because people don't understand it or simply don't want something strapped to their head. I fear it being the next 3D glasses thing, but I'm glad it exists.

Well of course it's gonna be used for great things. I mean some of the earliest groups to get excited about this is stuff such as the military and hospitals. I mean just thinking about how this can be used in the private sector to improve things. Imagine an engineer walking through his building before it even begins construction.

That's the sort of thing I had in mind. Also the old lady who was immobile and got to experience a look at the outside world before she passed away. It certainly has a place, but to turn up the greatest profit they'll need a lot of consumers to buy it, and given how new it is, if it's hard to access a test run of the thing I reckon people will be turned off putting money towards it.

Hmm, even I have been gaming pretty much all my life I'm not very interested in Oculus. Also I prefer precision of keyboard + gaming mouse over any motion control virtual reality, maybe because I have been playing mostly MMORPG's and MOBA's where immersion doesn't mean much, and smooth control is everything (at least for me). That option seem to be possible tho.

I tried it over a year ago . The experience cannot be described in words, but I will say that it is almost like real events, your body can go into an adrenaline rush, and it can make you physically sick, (due to falling out of an in-game sky). Oh, and Occulus requires no menus, (ruins VR), and controllers/keyboards.

My reaction to it:

Microsoft and Sony should have developed their versions sooner. Especially Microsoft, I have heard nothing from them.
