Anime and slapstick

I was watching some silly-but-occasionally-entertaining anime the other week (Elementaler I think) wondering why I was laughing, when it, so to speak, struck me...

A HUGE amount of the humour we see in anime is fundamentally slapstick.

This makes a certain amount of sense. The really subtle jokes are going to have trouble making it past the language barrier, but watching other people get slapped, falling over, and so forth - but rarely actually hurt, as is also usually the case in old-style Western animation - is the sort of humour that really crosses language barriers. It's certainly the easiest type of humour to represent.

It's not subtle, but it does explain why having a guy trip over, face-plant in a girl's breasts, then get whacked to dinnertime next Tuesday, is funny rather than creepy.

Of course there's a lot more to anime than humour, and even a lot more to anime humour than slapstick. This viewpoint does have the advantage that I can now see some of these shows as modern-day takes on Charlie Chaplin.

... Heck, they even both have subtitles!

I'll probably get some hate for jumping straight to the AOT bandwagon, but this is still my favourite example of slapstick in anime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OJZ04SSBzg Combined with the subtitles it looks like some abridged series, funny stuff.

That was ridiculous. XD
I was watching that trying to figure out where that was in the manga...then realized it wasn't.

As far as slapstick, Log Horizon has that, particularly Akatsuki kicking Naotsugu in the face when he's about to say something pervy. Some people get all upset about that, but I always considered it to be just slapstick. I watched a large amount of Loony Toons, Hana-Barbera, and Three Stooges as a child. I am well acquainted with slapstick.

Though I don't care for the guy tripping into a girl's boobs variety (with the exception of the scene in Baccano). That tends to get too close to embarrasement humor, which I am not a fan of.

I swear they blew all their earnings from the season on drugs and then made that episode, because the broken knee part was completely sane in comparison to the food contest.
