I'm only 22, but I think it would be super cool if something similar to Oriemo happened with Saori and everyone. A meet up with a bunch of Otakus

Can anyone here kindly explain the difference between otaku and an anime fan? I always thought both words have the same meaning, no?

Many thanks for taking time to educate me!

I'm 42. First anime was Starblazers, then Robotech, but grew up in a Japanese household so there was always something from Japan playing on TV. Space Battleship Yamato and Macross (I fixed my ways lol) are my favs still =^^=

I was 3 when the first star wars movie came out, I'll let you do the math.
we saw that movie about 8 times in the theater back then. (I have cool parents) speaking of cool parents.. My mom has a CR account too. you are never too old for good anime.

Hey Taitou =^^=

Basically otaku has two meanings but it depends on which side of the ocean you are on. In the west, otaku simply means an anime fan and can vary in degrees of intensity. Some of us are fanatics heh =^~=

In Japan the term doesn't necessarily apply to anime and manga like it does here. An otaku is someone who is obsessed by a particular hobby. Unfortunately the term isn't looked at with great appeal by Japanese culture as a whole, because of a several murders, kidnappings, and rapes that have happened in the past which were committed by otaku. Now those horrific crimes do not apply to the community as a whole. The criminals who committed those crimes were messed up in the head to begin with. The reason Japanese culture would relate them to the entire community is that Japanese culture revolves around the group and what one person does reflects greatly on the group. Quite different from the United States or west but similar in many ways too.
Most otaku in Japan are basically like otaku here in the west, they have a great passion for their hobby. Japanese society has started to accept otaku for what they are but most still view them as strange or socially awkward (OUR KIND OF PEOPLE!). The attitudes toward otaku in Japan would be like the pre nerd and geek awesomeness era that we live in now in the states =^^=

So basically:

America
Otaku = anime/manga fan (puffs out chest, fist bump, silly dance!). Pretty well accepted in society.

Japan
Otaku = fanatical fan of a hobby, not necessarily anime or manga. Majority of society view's them as "interesting". Culture is slowly changing. Not really accepted like here in the US.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions please ask away =^^=

I am 40 and I don't really consider myself an otaku because I'm not really a collector but my entertainment is mostly anime. I don't watch TV anymore, I watch old anime shows. I do enjoy the Japanese culture that I see from the anime-slant, but you can't base an entire culture from a single point of view. I would have to say I am very pro-japan... as long as anime keeps coming out...
