What are spoilers?

As the title reads, very often after watching an episode I like to browse the chat below.

As I'm certain everyone has noticed some of the comments contain the "Spoiler" tag, usually around 90% of the time this is a spoiler for the current episode which is understandable and provides nice insight into the episode I have just viewed.

However the other 10% of the time its people literally telling me how the next 100 episodes are going to be conducted, combining that with also mentioning how the next 10 seasons end (Bit of dramatization).

So my question is, spoilers? Should they be a detailed explanation of the whole series ahead or just the nice little bit of insight into the episode that I enjoy?

They should only be about the episode, and people who post any kind of major spoiler about what happens in future episodes should be shot. If it's an adaptation from a manga then they could take the discussion to the manga section and not be assholes to everyone. I guess the one good thing is that nine times out of ten everyone will just downvote their comment so people who watch later on won't be spoiled.

But there are always going to be people who say it's your own fault for having no restraint, as it was clearly labelled 'spoiler', even though that should only apply to content up to the episode just watched.

I agree. Spoiler tags should have one episode of information.

This. Thank you. You're fantastic.

I pretty much had to avoid the Comments section like the plague when I was watching Fate Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya 2wei! a month or so ago. I wasn't even at episode 9 yet and the comments were full of heated discussions and spoilers from the manga, which is done. Some comments even started mentioning 3rei! afterwards. And here I thought I was going to enjoy comments about the episode I just watched...

Don't read spoilers. Problem solved. If it's not against the rules I'm not going to tailor my conversation to your ideals. Deal with it like an adult and move on. If it is against the rules go report it to a moderator and let them handle it.

I assume you are talking about episode comments.

The problem arises from some people thinking they should be able to read the comments before they view the episode, and therefore everyone should cater to their preference by spoilering anything revealing about the very episode the comments are about. If it wasn't for that, it would be quite clear that spoilers pertain to something in the future.

It would help if CR's system prompted for a short identifying label when the spoiler box was clicked (and possibly gave examples like "manga/light novel spoiler", etc.).

I feel that there shouldn't be spoiler tags if it talked about the episode you just watched since you shouldn't be looking at the comments until finishing that episode and if people wanted to discuss beyond that episode then they would use spoiler tags.

If people are commenting on episode 11 of anime X then you can be damn sure they are commenting about that episode; that is the point and shouldn't be considered spoilers.

If you are expecting people to spoiler tag their discussion and comments on the episode that said discussion pertains too then I'm sorry but you've missed the point and should watch the episode FIRST.
That's like starting chapter 1 of a manga then reading the latest chapter discussion and complaining people were talking about stuff you haven't read yet

The problems are the spoilers that are unmarked. I have stopped reading episode comments on some anime I like because of these, but the problem is NOT "solved", because the real problem is how to read non-spoiler comments while being able to avoid spoilers. So I should just stop enjoying reading comments just because people won't mark spoilers as such?

CR needs to be more aggresive on this issue. As I have mentioned in the Premium Forum, some unmarked spoilers are actually upvoted into +15 and beyond, which means that the score system does not "solve" the problem.

A "spoiler" is any information that can disrupt the enjoyment of the story. That can be about an episode or the whole series, you view at your own risk. The whole spoiler tag was created to prevent accidental spoiler exposure while reading threads, but it's still up to you to choose to look or not.

If everything related to the current episode was put in a spoiler tag, the entire page would be full of spoiler tags.

Just wait until the episode is over to read them.

If I watch on my 27" screen I have to look away before I hit the full screen button but I manage.

Unless I am caught up with the source material I just don't click on spoiler tags and I have only been spoiled a handful of times reading episode comments.

Ok . That's not what the op was referring to when they said spoilers though. We're talking about future episode spoilers inside spoiler tags for a specific episode. Spoilers should absolutely be marked as a courtesy if it's not a rule. I am not debating this.
