I was on my way back to my dorm after eating lunch when I started to think about humanity's love for order. How we love patterns, plans, schedules....we even see such things in places where they don't exist.

You see this in a variety of ways, from hindsight bias to gambler's fallacy, and even to when people start going to the gym. The start is always the hardest, as the body isn't used to it. This isn't it's normal routine. But keep going, and the original routine is pasted over with the new routine, and it becomes easier. If a coin lands on heads four times in a roll, what is the most likely outcome of the next flip? Tails? Heads? Neither. The toss is still fifty percent as always, and past flips do not influence future outcomes.

But why do we crave these patterns, this order, so much? This is not a natural phenomenon. Look out into the wild. You will not find order there. You'll find a harmony, of sorts, and see that everything works out one way or another.....but it is not order. It is chaos. The naturally occurring phenomenon in the world, without human influence and merely observation, is not order but chaos.

Just a thought... It's like God.... We crave an order to give us some sort of comfort about the future. People like to make plans and any plans are built on the idea that there is some sort of order or pattern. Interestingly, personally as well, just living "for today" seems kind of chaotic...

Why do a lot of us dislike chaos?
Anal-retentiveness?

We must descend into chaos! Let Ragnarok fall upon us; we shall slay our enemies when the time comes and only then can true chaos be achieved!!

shall lead the way!

Yin/Yang. Chaos/order, light/dark, good/evil are flip-sides of the same coin. Where there is one, the other is there or not far behind... all light casts a shadow, and in every shadow, there is light... try to avoid absolute thinking.

Crap, beat me to it. This whole thread reminded me of how I once used astronomy to demonstrate how opposites transmute into each other. Absolute opposites are a myth, and hence why people philosophically veer off course on the subject. Love me some Taoism.

Sometimes chaos if fun and exciting.... I used to enjoy it now and again.... I find I feel that way less and less as I get older.
Although having consistent day to day lives can be mind-numbingly boring, it's also less stressful. Having had a GREAT number of drama-queens in my life some of them were my bosses I have possibly gotten lazy in the desire for the mundane; NOT always but more often than not, It tends to lessen my stress and the desire to rip someone's arm off and beat them with it. Drinking has the same effect ( I think, not affect?)... but in large enough quantities adult beverages can be a unique brand of chaos all their own...
