I've just moved to Japan and I'm going to be here for a long time, I've just got my internet working and I'm having a hard time finding somewhere I can legally watch anime dubbed english or with subtitles here. I've been subscribed to Crunchyroll for a while now but I can no longer watch any videos.

Japan seems to have very draconian anti-piracy laws so I don't want to do anything illegal, is using a VPN to watch anime from legal sites abroad illegal here in Japan or is it ok?

My only other option is cancelling my subscription and surviving with no anime to watch.

Hi,

Deleted some bad advice from a reply here...

I'm not sure on specific Japan laws, but as far as CR goes, my suggestion would be to use the Contact Us link and see if you can suspend your payments until you get home, or if they have other ideas.

Sorry I can't help more,

It's true, there's not really any way to stream anime legally IN Japan. It's also crazy expensive to buy... They do run anime on TV, but it's often quite late at night. If you're planning to learn Japanese, I would suggest switching to reading manga while you're in Japan. Used CDs and American movies (English & Japanese language tracks) are also quite cheap. So basically, I suggest frequenting your local Book Off while in Japan :)

Please post back if you do hear of any legal streaming options! And good luck in the meantime.
