True real cat eyes are not as good in some respects, but catgirls being upright bipeds eyes would develop on the human model for long range visiion, etc. So I was taking that into consideration. But there is ONE explanation we haven't explored. That the cat ears are NOTHING more than emotional state indicators. I.E the ears do no actual hearing.

Wutt. ^^^

And even if evolution would take it's course, just because something doesn't serve a practical purpose in survival, there are many adaptations that serve no purpose in surviving yet have evolved. i.e. face blushing, as a sign of emotion, crying while sad, etc
So catgirl ears would probably persist if it helped them "socially" only if the only function is to be an emotional indicator, as it seems to be the cause between all catgirls.

I would point out that both blushing and tears are byproducts of other biological processes that DO have survival uses. I.e. increased heart rate. blood flow and keeping the eyes moist so people can see what they are doing. But I'd also point out that emotions are important to animals. Even the most primitive brain has the 3 Fs. (Fight, Flight or Fu . . procreate) hardwired into the brain. I would HIGHLY recommend finding and watching Why Do Dogs Smile and Chimpanzees Cry? for a fantastic look at emotions in animals other than humans. Amazon has it: http://tinyurl.com/lvax5up; but it's not super cheap. Also I'd argue that emotions play a survival role anyways. Have you ever wondered why human babies and animal babies (mammals) share a certain traits: big eyes, small head, etc? (Part of it is all mammals evolved from a common ancestor millions and millions of years ago.) But, in part, because it tricks the parents hearts into going awwwwwwwwwwwwww instead of ewwwwwwwwwww and dumping the baby in the trash. I will admit that I also failed to mention that catpeople ears are also probably erogenous/pleasure zones too. And because this is a wall of text; I give you a cute picture.

EDIT: Just fixing typos.

While the discussion so far has focused on detailed technical aspects of biology and evolution, I can't help but feel that the single most important question has been completely overlooked: Which ear style is cutest? ^_^

Personally, I just have to vote for the bunneh with this one =D Don't tell my feline overlords I said that tho.... >.>

Here's a cute pic of RWBY's Velvet:

I think for me it is Holo's wolf ears.

Now if we saw Fennec ears . . that would be the cutest of them all.

Now, now. Let us all remember the teachings of the great sensei Frankram Stein. There are no "best" animal ears because all animal ears are best.
