Aniplex is paying itself? I'm pretty sure it's all owned by Sony. Just different branches on different continents. Do you have any links? I want to read up on this if it's in fact true.

Is there a source that confirms this? I've been under the impression that AoA acts not only as a distributor, but also as a licensor - as in they handle the rights for all Aniplex titles in the English speaking countries. After that I imagine the process to be similar to what you described, where AoA can still license it out to other US companies if the offer is above their expected returns (although the only recent case of this happening is Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus).

The source is EJ Rivera, aka The Aniplex Guy, at the Q&A sessions they do. Sadly, I don't have a link as they are live events. I may be able to find a transcript or video from him mentioning this at an Aniplex panel if I dig around a bit, but don't have the time atm. Anyhow, if you are curious feel free to contact EJ on facebook or twitter, or email him (link to his email is on the Aniplex of America website). He will answer your questions, assuming he is legally able, if you ask politely.

Also, AoA does not handle all Aniplex titles in the US. The licenses for each are bid on and go to the winning bidder. For example, FUNimation licensed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which is an Aniplex title, and has streaming, DVD, and Blu-ray distribution rights for that title according to their contract. To clarify, FUNi licenses it from Japan directly. They have nothing to do with the US Aniplex as they do not have the rights to deal the license. AoA must also license anime from Japan just as every other US licensor does.

Fair enough, may I just ask how old that Q&A session is? I've noticed a change with how AoA handles titles from around 2013 (not to be confused when they started becoming more prominent in distribution/streaming in 2011).

Within the past year. I bet Justin Sevakis over at ANN weighed in on this topic in the Answerman column, or an article he wrote, at some point as well.

I think the only reason Aniplex is still going cause they have alot of the hot shows that people want to see..

Let's not forget that Aniplex is owned by Sony. $$$$$$ backing. They also release dvd sets for 1/3 of the price of the BD sets.

Going onto the subject of pony Canyon ... I really can't say I care right now. Too little information.

True on the DvD set still damn expensive thought. and I would rather own the blu-rays for some of there shows.
